Coinbase is expanding its UK trading services with perpetuals, dated futures and crypto options for eligible professional investors, adding regulated derivatives to its growing local product range.
The rollout will begin progressively over the coming weeks following Coinbase’s recently secured MiFID license. The exchange said the new offering will cover more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange, with access limited to clients who meet professional investor requirements.
Coinbase Expands UK Derivatives Offering
The new Coinbase derivatives service will include perpetual contracts, dated futures and crypto options. Perpetual contracts will be available around the clock and will offer leverage of up to 50 times, while dated futures will provide fixed settlement dates with leverage of up to 20 times.
The options offering will focus on cryptocurrencies and will include calls, puts and multi-leg strategies. Coinbase said the products will be available only to eligible UK professional clients under the requirements linked to its regulatory permissions.
The launch follows Coinbase’s recent MiFID license, which expanded the company’s ability to provide investment services in the UK. The authorization allows the exchange to add derivatives to its local offering while maintaining restrictions based on client classification and eligibility.
Coinbase has not made the products available to all UK investors. Access depends on professional client status and other applicable requirements, with availability being introduced in stages.
UK Expansion Supports Coinbase’s Everything Exchange Strategy
The derivatives launch adds to Coinbase’s wider effort to offer multiple financial products through one platform. The company has been expanding beyond cryptocurrency trading to include equities, stablecoins, savings and borrowing services.
Coinbase recently began rolling out access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible UK users. The stock offering gives customers access to equities alongside cryptocurrency and fiat balances through the same platform.
The exchange has described this broader product approach as its “Everything Exchange” strategy. The expansion allows Coinbase to provide services across several asset categories while building on its existing cryptocurrency infrastructure.
The UK has become a key market for the company’s broader product rollout. Coinbase’s UK regulatory disclosures state that CB Payments Ltd is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for investment services and is also authorized under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011 to issue electronic money.
Coinbase Broadens Revenue Beyond Spot Crypto Trading
The UK derivatives launch also comes as Coinbase works to increase revenue from products beyond traditional cryptocurrency spot trading. In its second-quarter results, the company said 88% of its net revenue came from sources other than Bitcoin spot trading.
Coinbase also reported that its share of global cryptocurrency trading volume reached 10.3% in the second quarter, compared with 9.1% during the first quarter. The figures cover the company’s broader trading activity across its markets.
The exchange has continued expanding its regulated services as it adds more products for different types of investors. The MiFID license provides the regulatory basis for its UK derivatives offering, while professional-client restrictions determine who can access the new products.
Coinbase said the derivatives rollout will take place progressively over the coming weeks. The company has not indicated that the products will be available to retail investors under the current launch.
