Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi. She grew up in Kentwood, a small town in the state of Louisiana. Her craving for stardom started at a young age.

When she was three, Britney was enrolled in dance lessons and was hand-selected to perform as a solo artist for the schools’ yearly recital. At the age of five, she performed the song “What Child is This?” for her classmates, all of the parents, and the teachers during her graduation from kindergarten. Spears also took voice lessons and won various talent shows for kids.

At the eight, Britney tried out for The Mickey Mouse Club, but she wasn’t cast for the show. The casting director, Matt Casella, said that she was too young, and rejected her; but, her talent was impressive and the Casella introduced her and her mother to Nancy Carson, a talent agent based in New York City.

Carson was blown away by Britney’s abilities and indicated that her mother she enroll her at the Professional Performing Arts School. Her mother, Lynne, heeded the advice, and she and her daughters moved to the Big Apple so that her eldest daughter, Britney, could pursue her dreams.

While in New York, Spears earned her first professional position; she was cast as the understudy for one of the stars of Ruthless!, an Off-Broadway musical. Soon after, she performed on Star Search, a popular television that showcased people of all ages performed a variety of talents and competed against one another.

Britney sang “Love can Build a Bridge”, but though she didn’t win, her performance captivated audiences. During this time, she also acted in several different television commercials.

In 1992, Britney Spears landed her biggest role yet; a member of the cast on Disney’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, where she sang, danced, and acted with the likes of other cast members that eventually went on to be mega-stars, including Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell, and Ryan Gosling.

The Start of her Singing Career

In 1997, Britney Spears singing career began to blossom. She was asked to join Innosense, a pop group. After her mother spoke with Larry Rudolph, a lawyer for the entertainment industry and a friend of the family, it was decided that Spears would be pitched to record labels to start a solo career.

Her demos were sent out to several big recording labels. All but one rejected Spears – Jive Records. Executives were impressed with not only her voice, but her performance. She was signed to Jive Records and began working on her first album in Sweden.

In January of 1999, her first studio album, …Baby One More Time, debuted. It hit number one on the US Billboard 200 and within a month after its release, it became a two-time platinum album. The album went on to top charts in 15 countries and more than 10 million copies were sold within one year.

Subsequently, …Baby One More Time was the most sold album by any teenage artist. The title track of the album was sold as a single and Spears performed a video for it (the school girl video that showcased Britney dancing and singing with a team of backup dancers that was played non-stop).

On the first day that it was released, 500,000 copies of the single were sold and it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained in the top spot for two weeks in a row. More than 10 million copies of the single have been sold, which makes it the best selling single ever released by anyone.

After the success of her first album, Britney Spears recorded and released her second album, Oops!… I Did It Again, which was also a massive success. More than 20 million copies of the album have been sold worldwide.

The Oops!… I Did It Again Tour raked in an unprecedented amount of money: $40.5 million. Britney success continued to grow, and so did her other ventures; as well as some of the very publicized spectacles.

Other Ventures

Britney Spears’ love life has gotten almost as much attention as her singing; if not more! To say that her relationships have been interesting is an understatement, so it’s no wonder why they have made headlines.

The first major relationship that Britney had after become a pop sensation was with fellow former Mickey Mouse Club alum and now uber-successful singer, actor, and all-around performer, Justin Timberlake.

The two began dating in 1998, and it appeared as if the couple had a picture perfect relationship, but in reality, it was anything but; in 2002, after four years of together, the duo called it quits.

Nobody knows exactly why things went south, but it’s been rumored that she wasn’t faithful; in fact, supposedly, Justin’s hit song Cry Me a River is about Britney and her affairs.

Once her split from Timberlake was announced, Spears announced that she was dating Wade Robson, a choreographer. It’s been rumored that Spears and Robinson were seeing each other behind Timberlake’s back; though that has not been confirmed. After a year, the duo also pulled the plug on their relationship.

In 2003, Britney entered the “bad boy” error of dating. It was then that she and Fred Durst, the frontman of Limp Bizkit, started seeing each other. Durst’s reputation wasn’t as squeaky clean as Timberlake’s and Spears has denied that they ever dated; however, Durst claims that he is not a liar and that they were, in fact, a couple.

It’s hard to say who is telling the truth. She was also rumored to have relationships (or at least relations) with Colin Farrell, Jared Leto, and Columbus Short, one of her backup dancers.

In 2004, Spears had her most attention-grabbing relationships. She married Jason Alexander, a childhood friend, in Las Vegas; however, the marriage was annulled just 55 hours later. Just a few months after the fiasco, in July of 2004, Britney announced that she and Kevin Federline, a dancer, were engaged.

The couple had only met three months prior to their engagement. Given the incredible fame that surrounded Spears and the fact that the romance so quickly lead to an engagement, as well as the fact that Federline had only recently broken up with Shar Jackson, who was still expecting their second child, the relationship between the two was highly publicized and the couple essentially lived under a microscope.

Britney and Kevin’s relationship was anything but boring; in fact, it was anything but typical. Makes sense, considering the fact that she was such a sensation and they abruptly announced their engagement.

To add to the attention that they were already receiving, the couple decided to chronicle their relationship on a reality show titles Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, which documented the supposed day-to-day life of the pair.

In September of 2004, just two months after they were engaged, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline held a small, surprise wedding ceremony ; however, they were not officially married until October 6, as a result of a delay in the prenuptial agreement that the couple had arranged for.

Britney and Kevin had two children together. She had said that she always wanted to be a young mother and she conceived her first son just a few months after the couple was wed.

She gave birth to their first son, Sean Preston, on September 14, 2005. Shortly thereafter, the couple was expecting their second child, another boy, Jayden James, who was born on September 12, 200, just two days before his older brother’s first birthday.

Trials, Tribulations, and Divorce

The news that Britney and Kevin’s relationship was going south started to spread not long after the couple welcomed their second son. In fact, it was just two months after their son Jayden was born that Britney filed for divorce from Kevin.

She cited irreconcilable differences as the reasoning for the divorce and it was made final in July of 2007. The pair reached a settlement and had agreed to share custody of their two children.

In the beginning of 2007, Spears’ aunt passed away. She had a strong connection with her aunt, and shortly after her death, Britney entered a rehab center in Antigua; though she was there for less than 24 hours.

The next day, she shaved her hair off at a Los Angeles salon and the imaged circulated around the world. Other images that showcased what apparently looked like a highly stressed out and angry Britney also circulated at the same time; she attacked paparazzi with an umbrella and went on a tirade.

You kind of can’t blame her, though, given all of the scrutiny that she has endured. After this stunt, she pulled back from the spotlight and focused on herself.

Reemergence

Since her very public breakdown, Britney Spears has reemerged. Today, she is just as successful as she was in the early 2000s. She is a permanent fixture at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
