Bitcoin retreated to the $63,900 level on Monday, erasing weekend advances as climbing crude oil prices dampened investor appetite for riskier assets worldwide.

Crude oil prices surged approximately 5% following Iran’s rejection of direct diplomatic engagement with the United States, with Tehran stipulating specific requirements before fully reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This development prompted investors to rotate into safe-haven instruments such as the U.S. dollar, creating downward pressure on cryptocurrency and equity markets.
Iranian deputy speaker Ali Nikzad declared that resolving the Strait situation “has no military solution.” Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude advanced to approximately $80.90 per barrel during Monday’s session.
The BTC/USD pair touched an intraday bottom of $64,447 on Bitstamp before stabilizing around $63,900, marking its lowest point since Friday’s trading.
Market analyst Daan Crypto Trades highlighted $64,000 as a pivotal threshold for Bitcoin, observing that this level corresponds with the 4-hour 200-period moving average, Monthly VWAP, and Weekly 200-period moving average—creating a significant technical confluence area. He cautioned that a sustained close beneath $64K could shift momentum advantage to bearish traders in the near term.
Strategy Continues Bitcoin Liquidation
Strategy divested 1,690 BTC for approximately $108.6 million during the period spanning August 3 through August 9, achieving an average sale price of $64,262 per token. The transaction was formally reported in an SEC filing released Monday.
The firm currently maintains holdings of 840,447 BTC, representing roughly $54.7 billion in market value. Strategy’s average acquisition cost across its entire portfolio stands at $75,385 per coin, indicating the company is presently experiencing unrealized losses on its position.
Strategy additionally liquidated 6,585,682 shares of MSTR common stock during the previous week, generating $653.1 million in proceeds. These funds were utilized to buy back preferred equity and increase its cash position to $4.65 billion as of August 9.
Institutional Investment Flows Stay Robust
Notwithstanding the price decline, institutional appetite remained resilient. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $865.3 million in aggregate net inflows over the past week, based on data from Farside Investors.

Glassnode observed that spot taker buying activity has intensified, though characterized the rebound as “tentative.” The analytics firm indicated that exchange turnover volume remains subdued, suggesting market consolidation rather than widespread speculative engagement.
CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju highlighted that hedge funds have shifted to net long positions in CME BTC futures contracts—an uncommon positioning move. He remarked: “The suits are betting on upside.”
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s U.S. Consumer Price Index release and Thursday’s Producer Price Index report, which traders will scrutinize for indications regarding potential Federal Reserve interest rate adjustments in September. Rising interest rates generally create headwinds for speculative assets including Bitcoin.
