Third-Quarter Financial Performance Shows Solid Top and Bottom Line Growth
BNY posted total revenue of $5.68 billion for the three-month period ending September 30, up from $5.08 billion in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Fee-based revenue advanced 12% to $4.08 billion, driven by heightened client engagement and successful new business wins. Net interest income contributed $1.42 billion, representing a 15% increase attributed to improved reinvestment yields and expanded balance sheet capacity.
The bank delivered net income attributable to common shareholders of $1.61 billion, a 20% rise from $1.34 billion recorded twelve months earlier. On a per-share basis, diluted earnings reached $2.34 versus $1.88 in the year-ago quarter. Despite the strong annual comparison, earnings per share dipped 4% sequentially from the $2.45 reported in the second quarter.
BNY achieved a pretax operating margin of 38.5%, improving from 36.4% in the third quarter of last year. Return on common equity strengthened to 16%, while return on tangible common equity climbed to 29%. Operating expenses totaled $3.49 billion, up 8% year over year, reflecting increased revenue-linked costs and strategic investment initiatives.
Securities Services Division Drives Fee Income Expansion
The Securities Services segment generated $2.82 billion in revenue during the quarter, marking a 15% increase from the prior-year period. Within this division, Asset Servicing contributed $2.13 billion, achieving 12% growth annually. Issuer Services added $690 million to the total, surging 27% compared to the same quarter in 2024.
Investment services fees jumped 19% to $1.71 billion, with both operating units contributing to the improvement. Securities lending revenue soared 48% to $92 million, while foreign exchange activity produced $171 million in revenue, up 20% from a year earlier. The segment’s noninterest expenses rose 10% to $1.81 billion as business expansion required additional operational support.
BNY reported assets under custody or administration of $63.4 trillion at quarter-end, reflecting 10% annual growth. Assets under management stood at $2.2 trillion, up 2% despite facing headwinds from outflows and currency fluctuations. Rising market valuations and new client mandates bolstered custody asset levels across the bank’s global servicing platforms.
Capital Distributions Continue Alongside Deposit Growth
During the third quarter, the bank distributed $1.4 billion to common shareholders through a combination of cash dividends and stock repurchases. Dividend payments accounted for $436 million of this total, while the bank bought back $937 million worth of its own shares. Through the first nine months of the year, the payout ratio reached 86%, demonstrating the bank’s commitment to returning excess capital.
Average deposits for the quarter totaled $311 billion, up 4% from the third quarter of 2024. On a sequential basis, deposits edged down 1% from the second quarter, while average loan balances surged 19% year over year. The bank recorded a minimal $1 million provision for credit losses during the reporting period.
BNY’s Common Equity Tier 1 ratio measured 10.9% at September 30, down from 11.7% one year prior. The Tier 1 leverage ratio declined to 5.7%, while the average liquidity coverage ratio registered 111%. Chief Executive Officer Robin Vince credited the quarterly performance to enhanced platform capabilities, strong client demand across business lines, and continued innovation in product offerings.
