The company’s operations now span eight European nations, incorporating multiple leading mobile network operators into synchronized satellite broadband trials throughout the continent. This advancement brings the BlueBird constellation nearer to launching commercial direct-to-smartphone services for underserved and remote areas.
Cross-Border Network Integration Gains Traction
The company is conducting active integration trials across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Romania, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, and Ukraine alongside regional telecommunications partners. These initiatives require obtaining regulatory clearances while satisfying technical specifications and operational mandates within each European telecommunications jurisdiction. Leading operators Vodafone, Orange, Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone Ukraine are facilitating regional trials leveraging their established national wireless infrastructure.
These telecommunications providers are connecting AST SpaceMobile’s orbital platform with ground-based networks via newly established carrier-agnostic gateways throughout Europe. Satellite Connect Europe is implementing this framework to provide universal access for operators pursuing dependable direct-to-device connectivity solutions. The Luxembourg-registered joint venture merges AST SpaceMobile’s space-based technology with Vodafone’s extensive regional expertise, infrastructure, partnerships, and market knowledge.
These trial programs enable conventional smartphones to communicate through orbital assets without necessitating supplementary hardware, specialized firmware, or dedicated mobile applications. Wireless carriers can thus expand coverage beyond traditional cell towers while maintaining their current billing platforms, spectrum licenses, and subscriber relationships. The constellation could enhance emergency response capabilities, public safety networks, enterprise applications, and governmental communications, particularly in areas lacking terrestrial infrastructure.
BlueBird Constellation Enables Global Commercial Rollout
AST SpaceMobile maintains its BlueBird satellite deployment schedule while broadening commercial partnerships and technological collaborations with wireless operators globally. The enterprise currently partners with approximately 60 carriers whose collective networks support over three billion active mobile users. This extensive footprint provides AST SpaceMobile with significant market access as it advances toward commercial launch across diverse international territories.
The orbital platforms employ extraordinarily large phased-array antennas designed to interface directly with conventional mobile handsets from low Earth orbit. Each advanced array measures roughly 2,400 square feet, approximately 223 square meters when completely unfurled in space. This design enables voice communications, high-speed data transmission, and video streaming without specialized satellite hardware or device modifications.
AST SpaceMobile recently recorded maximum download throughput of 98.9 Mbps using its inaugural Block 1 BlueBird satellites during field trials. Next-generation orbital assets aim to deliver approximately double these peak velocities while providing expanded coverage footprints and enhanced network capabilities under optimal conditions. Additionally, roughly 3,900 issued and pending patent claims safeguard the company’s satellite architecture, communications protocols, and direct-to-device innovations.
