Apple has introduced a new generation of the iPad mini, featuring the powerful A17 Pro chip and support for the company’s upcoming AI-powered features, known as Apple Intelligence. The latest iteration of the compact tablet is set to hit stores next week, with pre-orders already available.
The new iPad mini, starting at $499, is powered by the same A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. This chip is crucial for running Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI software suite. According to Apple, the A17 Pro chip offers a 30% boost in CPU performance compared to the previous generation iPad mini.
Apple plans to roll out the first set of AI features for U.S. English users later this month through a software update (iPadOS 18.1). These features will be available for iPads equipped with A17 Pro or M1 chips and later generations. The company has promised additional capabilities, including image-generation tools, Genmoji, and ChatGPT-powered functions, in the coming months.

The device maintains its compact 8.3-inch display and side-button Touch ID from the 2021 model. However, it now offers several improvements, including Wi-Fi 6E support, an upgraded 10Gbps USB-C port, and an enhanced 12MP rear camera with Smart HDR 4. The new iPad mini is also compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro, allowing for hover features over the display.
Storage options have been expanded, with the base model now offering 128GB, double the previous generation’s capacity. Users can also opt for 256GB and 512GB versions, priced at $599 and $799, respectively. The device comes in four colors: blue, purple, space gray, and starlight.
One notable aspect of the launch is that Apple Intelligence will not be immediately available to iPhone and iPad users in the European Union due to ongoing discussions with EU regulators over competition laws.
Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of worldwide product marketing, emphasized the iPad mini’s unique position in the market, stating, “There is no other device in the world like iPad mini, beloved for its combination of powerful performance and versatility in our most ultraportable design.”
The introduction of AI capabilities to the iPad mini aligns with the broader industry trend of integrating artificial intelligence into consumer devices. Competitors like Google and Samsung have already introduced AI-powered features to their smartphones this year, putting pressure on Apple to enter this space.
While the full extent of Apple Intelligence’s capabilities is yet to be revealed, the company has confirmed that it will include writing tools to help users refine text across different apps by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing content.
