Anthropic has announced a plan to set aside part of its shares for a new group called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The company shared the news in a post on Oct. 18, 2026.
Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic’s shares will be committed right away. The board may add another 2% for every 50% rise in the company’s value above a set baseline.
The fund will be set up as a wholly owned LLC. Anthropic chose this format over a 501(c)(3) so it can switch between different kinds of giving.
The company said none of the equity held by the LLC will go toward lobbying or political giving. That rule covers the US and other countries.
What the fund is meant to do
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation, and most of its mission work happens inside the company. That includes AI safety research, interpretability research and applied biomedical research. It also includes discounts on Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions.
The company said those projects offer both public benefit and for-profit value. For that reason, they stay in house.
The new fund is designed to give Anthropic more flexibility and scale. It may be used for large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct payments to specific groups of people.
Anthropic pointed to the job market as one example. It said AI could create large economic value but may also cause instability for many workers.
The company has already committed $200 million to study and address that issue. It said the fund could support other approaches as AI keeps moving quickly.
Earlier pledges and next steps
Anthropic said the fund’s share will rise as the company grows. The more the company is worth, the larger the portion that can be dedicated to the public good.
The company pointed out that tech firms often give executives escalating pay awards. Anthropic said it is sending that equity to public benefit instead.
The plan builds on earlier commitments. When Anthropic was founded, its co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity.
The company also runs an equity donation match program, where employees pledge equity and Anthropic matches it. About half of its employees take part.
Taken together with the new fund, roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares will be dedicated to the public good. More could be added if the company hits certain valuation milestones.
Anthropic said it will share more about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months. That will include the valuation milestones that may increase the stake.
The company also plans to publish a public benefit report on its progress against its mission. Its latest announcement, made Oct. 18, 2026, is subject to stockholder approval.
