American Express has announced its intention to acquire Hyper, an artificial intelligence-focused expense management platform established in 2022 with financial support from OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. This strategic acquisition represents AmEx’s continued commitment to integrating advanced automation capabilities throughout its commercial offerings.
Hyper’s platform leverages artificial intelligence agents to streamline the tedious aspects of expense administration — automatically organizing expenditures, generating expense reports, validating submissions against spending limits and organizational policies, and sending timely reminders to staff members.
This isn’t the first collaboration between these organizations. During 2024, they joined forces to introduce the Hypercard Rewards American Express card, featuring integrated AI expense management capabilities enabled through AmEx’s Agile Partner Platform.
The current acquisition represents a significant evolution of their existing partnership, integrating Hyper’s technological infrastructure directly within AmEx’s operational framework.
The companies have not revealed the purchase price. Completion of the acquisition is projected for Q2 2026, pending customary regulatory approvals and closing requirements.
Strengthening Commercial Operations
AmEx has been strategically expanding its commercial business segment. Just last month, the financial services giant unveiled a new commercial credit card offering featuring cashback incentives and exclusive benefits, carrying an annual membership fee of $295.
Additional card products are scheduled for release later this year.
During his recent shareholder communication last month, AmEx CEO Stephen Squeri characterized artificial intelligence as driving a “structural shift” in business operations. The Hyper acquisition aligns perfectly with this strategic vision.
According to Raymond Joabar, Group President of Global Commercial Services at AmEx: “Our customers want smarter, more efficient ways to manage expenses so they can focus on what’s next for their business.”

Following the acquisition announcement, AXP stock experienced minor downward movement, declining approximately 0.69% during the trading session.
