Key Highlights
- Advanced Micro Devices unveiled its Helios rack-scale AI infrastructure platform Thursday in San Francisco, mounting a direct challenge to Nvidia’s data center leadership.
- The Helios platform integrates Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software into a unified solution.
- The company secured a partnership with Anthropic for deploying up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 GPUs, backed by AMD’s investment of up to $5 billion in the AI firm.
- An expanded Microsoft collaboration will bring Helios to Azure for frontier model inference operations, with deliveries commencing in late 2026.
- While AMD commands approximately 4.5% of the data center GPU sector compared to Nvidia’s 95%-plus share, its data center division posted 57% year-over-year growth, reaching $5.78 billion in Q1 2026.
Advanced Micro Devices is mounting its most aggressive campaign yet in the AI infrastructure arena, unveiling cutting-edge hardware alongside blockbuster client agreements — though Nvidia’s market position remains overwhelmingly dominant.
Shares of AMD traded approximately 1.45% higher Thursday as the semiconductor manufacturer commenced its AI hardware showcase at San Francisco’s Moscone West convention center.

The highlight of Thursday’s event is Helios, representing AMD’s inaugural rack-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure. The system integrates Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking silicon, and ROCm software into a comprehensive platform engineered for both AI model training and inference operations.
Helios represents AMD’s strategic response to Nvidia’s proprietary rack-scale infrastructure offerings. Nvidia maintains control of more than 95% of the data center GPU segment, while AMD captures roughly 4.5%, based on Futurum Group data reported by CNBC.
The company is simultaneously introducing the Venice CPU architecture for data center applications during the event — a processor that has been under development for an extended period.
Thursday’s unveiling comes on the heels of multiple partnership revelations earlier in the week that provided AMD with substantial commercial validation ahead of the launch.
Anthropic Collaboration Agreement
AMD revealed a collaboration with Anthropic on Wednesday to implement up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 Series GPUs within Helios infrastructure. The initial gigawatt deployment phase is scheduled to commence during the first half of 2027.
As part of the arrangement, AMD is committing a strategic equity investment reaching up to $5 billion in Anthropic.
The partnership includes a multi-year engineering cooperation initiative. The objective centers on leveraging Anthropic’s Claude AI to enhance workload performance on AMD Instinct GPUs while accelerating refinement of AMD’s ROCm software platform.
AMD will additionally implement Claude throughout its internal engineering and product development operations.
Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer at Anthropic, stated: “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude.”
Microsoft Collaboration Expansion
AMD broadened its collaboration with Microsoft earlier this week. The agreement will see Microsoft integrate Helios into Azure infrastructure for powering frontier model inference applications.
The chipmaker anticipates initiating Helios shipments to customers — including Microsoft — during the second half of 2026.
In October 2025, AMD revealed a multiyear arrangement with OpenAI potentially generating tens of billions in annual revenue. That agreement provides OpenAI with the option to acquire approximately 10% of AMD.
AMD’s data center business generated $5.78 billion in revenue during Q1 2026, representing a 57% increase compared to the corresponding quarter in the previous year. The expansion was fueled by strong demand for EPYC server processors and Instinct GPU deliveries.
CEO Lisa Su commented that the Anthropic partnership “brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing.”
With confirmed customers including Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI for its next-generation AI infrastructure, AMD has assembled a portfolio representing a significant escalation in its competitive positioning against Nvidia.
