Google is broadening its Indian operations well beyond traditional data center development. Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Union Minister for Electronics and IT, revealed that the tech giant is currently evaluating potential investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and establishing manufacturing operations for servers and drones within Indian borders.
In a post on X, Vaishnaw stated: “Google is exploring investments in India across AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones.” The company has not issued a statement in response to media inquiries regarding these plans.
This development follows Google’s October 2025 pledge to invest $15 billion across five years in constructing a data center and artificial intelligence hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Google characterized this commitment as its most substantial investment in India to date.
The official groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 28, with Google working alongside partners AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. The company emphasized this represents its “largest investment in India’s digital future to date.”
GOOGL shares were hovering around $165 during publication, showing approximately 3% gains over the preceding week.
Inside the Visakhapatnam Development
The initiative centers on India’s first gigawatt-scale artificial intelligence hub — consisting of three data center facilities delivering a combined 1 GW hyperscale capacity. The Andhra Pradesh state government has allocated approximately 600 acres spanning the Turluvada, Rambilli, and Adavivaram regions for this development.
During the groundbreaking event, Vaishnaw highlighted Visakhapatnam’s trajectory toward becoming an “AI Patnam” — essentially an AI City — fueled by international investment and advanced digital infrastructure.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, characterized the project as “an inflexion point for the country’s AI-native future.”
Bikash Koley, Google Cloud’s infrastructure VP, emphasized that the hub would “play a critical role in India’s digital transformation and global AI economy.”
Jeet Adani, AdGroup Director, described the 1 GW facility as “a major milestone in India’s AI journey.”
Government Advocates for Domestic Manufacturing
The minister’s recent statements extend beyond data center infrastructure. Vaishnaw explicitly urged Google to establish manufacturing operations for servers, GPUs, and semiconductor chips within India — an initiative consistent with the nation’s comprehensive electronics manufacturing objectives.
He emphasized that India is “becoming a trusted partner in semiconductor and electronics production” and urged international technology firms to expand their domestic manufacturing footprint.
