A pair of cutting-edge Chinese AI systems are creating significant ripples across international financial markets, driving capital flows from chip manufacturers toward Chinese technology platforms.
Alibaba introduced a preview of Qwen3.8 Max, featuring 2.4 trillion parameters. The firm claims this model ranks just behind Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5. Meanwhile, Beijing-headquartered Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3, an open-weight system with 2.8 trillion parameters that achieved a score of 57 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
In performance rankings, Kimi K3 positioned itself alongside Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol, while demonstrating superior results in front-end coding during blind Arena evaluations. Following the product debut, Moonshot AI had to temporarily suspend accepting new subscribers due to overwhelming interest.
Alibaba’s stock price jumped as high as 6% during Hong Kong trading hours on Monday. Tencent’s shares increased 4%. The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 4%, while the main Hang Seng Index posted gains exceeding 2%.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
In U.S. premarket trading, Alibaba climbed approximately 4%, while Baidu registered a 3.8% increase.
Major Chinese Technology Firms Stand to Gain
Both Alibaba and Tencent maintain ownership positions in Moonshot AI. Alibaba secured a 36% ownership stake through a February 2024 investment round, with Tencent also participating as a confirmed investor.
According to Bernstein analysts, the benefits extend well beyond these equity holdings. As AI systems become increasingly competitive, cloud infrastructure providers and internet platforms gain enhanced negotiating leverage with model developers. Bernstein stated that Kimi’s market success “probably a positive for Alicloud revenue growth.”
Alibaba possesses an additional advantage in consumer reach. Apple Intelligence obtained Chinese regulatory approval in mid-July 2026, with Alibaba’s Qwen designated as the core model driving the China-specific experience.
Citi analysts highlight that organizations offering comprehensive capabilities — including semiconductors, cloud infrastructure, AI models, and end-user applications — such as Alibaba are strategically positioned for leadership. They also emphasized Tencent’s desktop AI tool WorkBuddy, which attracts 8 to 9 million monthly users, as an underappreciated competitive strength.
Semiconductor Stocks Experience Sharp Decline
The rally in Chinese AI platform stocks occurred alongside significant losses in the semiconductor sector. South Korea’s KOSPI index declined 4.5% on Monday. Both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix saw their shares fall more than 4%. The KOSPI now trades 28% lower than its level one month prior, although it maintains a 55% gain year-to-date.
International investors have withdrawn $110 billion from Seoul markets year-to-date. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index entered confirmed bear market territory last week, declining over 20% from its late-June record high.
Deutsche Bank observed that Chinese AI systems are achieving near-frontier performance levels while maintaining pricing comparable to mid-range U.S. alternatives. This dynamic creates economic pressure on expensive U.S. AI infrastructure investments.
Goldman Sachs indicated that China’s open-source AI technology has reached a “critical point of intelligence performance for global proliferation.” Morgan Stanley characterized Kimi K3 as “the result of cumulative progress across China’s AI model industry,” emphasizing this represents gradual advancement rather than a sudden breakthrough.
Market participants are now focusing on July 27, when Moonshot AI plans to publicly release Kimi K3’s open weights.
