Shares of Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) advanced 5.95% to reach $1,364.98, gaining $76.68 throughout the session. The pharmaceutical manufacturer announced third-quarter 2026 revenue totaling $24.4 billion, marking a 39% year-over-year increase. Robust performance from its diabetes and weight-loss medications Mounjaro and Zepbound underpinned the results, prompting the company to elevate its full-year revenue forecast.
Diabetes and Weight-Loss Drugs Power Quarterly Revenue Expansion
The pharmaceutical manufacturer posted $24.397 billion in third-quarter revenue, up from $17.601 billion in the corresponding 2025 period. The increase stemmed from a 53% surge in sales volume, though a 15% drop in realized pricing partially tempered gains. Mounjaro and Zepbound continued serving as the principal catalysts for expansion across key global markets.
Within the United States, revenue grew 34% to $15.1 billion, driven by a 41% volume increase. Yet realized prices fell 7%, chiefly due to Zepbound pricing dynamics and modifications to rebate and discount calculations. International markets delivered 47% revenue growth to $9.3 billion, fueled by a 76% volume surge led predominantly by Mounjaro distribution.
The organization also recognized $410 million from Jardiance sales-based milestone payments via its partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim. These milestone receipts contributed to quarterly top-line figures, along with beneficial adjustments to rebate and discount reserves. Additionally, revenue from flagship products spanning immunology, oncology, and neuroscience sectors doubled versus the third quarter of 2025.
Net Income Advances Despite Research and Development Acquisition Costs
The pharmaceutical company delivered third-quarter net income of $6.45 billion, representing a 16% increase from $5.58 billion in the prior-year period. Reported earnings per share climbed 16% to $7.22, compared with $6.21 in the third quarter of 2025. Nevertheless, charges associated with acquired in-process research and development substantially influenced reported profitability.
Non-GAAP net income totaled $6.68 billion, up 6% from $6.31 billion year-over-year. Adjusted earnings per share increased 7% to $7.48 versus $7.02 in the comparable period. Both GAAP and adjusted earnings reflected $4.57 per share in acquired research and development expenses, compared with $0.71 in the previous year.
Gross profit expanded 40% to $20.5 billion, while the gross margin percentage reached 83.9%. An improved product portfolio mix and reduced manufacturing costs supported margin expansion, although lower realized pricing constrained additional gains. Research and development expenditures increased 23% to $4.2 billion as the company maintained investment in its clinical development programs.
Company Elevates Full-Year Projections After Exceeding Quarterly Expectations
Eli Lilly revised its 2026 revenue guidance upward by $5.5 billion at the midpoint, establishing a new range of $91 billion to $92 billion. Management also lifted its underlying full-year non-GAAP earnings forecast by $4.07 per share at the midpoint. However, acquisition-related research and development costs offset this improvement, resulting in updated earnings guidance of $35 to $36 per share.
Regulatory milestones included United States clearance for Mounjaro’s cardiovascular risk reduction indication among adults with type 2 diabetes. The company additionally obtained approvals for Onswik, Inluriyo combined with Verzenio, and an extended indication for Jaypirca.
