Shares of SK Hynix (SKHY) surged 12.35% to reach $163.31, gaining $17.95 in value amid heavy investor buying. The significant price movement came after the memory chip manufacturer disclosed breakthrough third-quarter financial results and operating profit figures, fueled by escalating demand for artificial intelligence memory products. The company simultaneously revealed plans for major shareholder distributions and capacity expansion initiatives.
Memory Manufacturer Achieves Unprecedented Quarterly Performance
SK Hynix delivered third-quarter revenue of 104.62 trillion won, representing the company’s first quarterly performance exceeding the 100 trillion won threshold. The figure demonstrated a 32% sequential increase from the prior quarter while soaring 328% versus the corresponding period in the previous year. Operating profit totaled 83.33 trillion won, representing a 38% gain from the preceding quarter and an extraordinary 632% climb year over year.
Operating margin reached 80% during the quarter, up from 76% three months earlier and substantially higher than the 47% recorded twelve months prior. Net income declined 58% sequentially to 39.78 trillion won, though it still represented a 216% annual increase. The financial performance underscores robust market appetite for cutting-edge memory solutions deployed in AI servers and cloud data center infrastructure.
Management credited the exceptional results to favorable pricing dynamics for core products alongside increasing volumes of premium memory offerings. DRAM revenue benefited from expanded Server DDR5 shipments, while HBM4 product deliveries commenced and gained momentum throughout the period. The NAND business similarly experienced strength through heightened demand for 321-layer triple-level cell enterprise solid-state storage devices.
Supply Constraints Drive Capacity Investment Strategy
Company executives anticipate memory demand will continue exceeding available supply through the end of the decade as artificial intelligence infrastructure buildouts accelerate globally. Management highlighted enterprise AI deployments, personal AI applications, autonomous vehicle systems, and robotics platforms as critical drivers of sustained memory consumption. Yet complex advanced manufacturing processes combined with extended factory construction cycles may constrain the semiconductor industry’s capacity to rapidly scale production output.
Addressing the anticipated demand surge, the company intends to ramp production volumes leveraging its sixth-generation 10-nanometer-class manufacturing process. SK Hynix will simultaneously pursue increased DDR5 and LPDDR5 SOCAMM shipments targeting AI server applications. Additionally, management aims to operate its M15X manufacturing facility at full capacity by year-end to boost HBM4 output.
Fourth-quarter projections indicate HBM4 products will surpass HBM3E in both unit shipments and revenue contribution. Concurrently, the chipmaker intends to elevate 321-layer NAND production to represent more than half of its domestic manufacturing capacity. These strategic initiatives position the company to capitalize on expanding opportunities within high-performance memory and enterprise storage segments.
Customer Agreements and Capital Allocation Framework
The memory manufacturer has secured long-term supply agreements with 14 significant customers, encompassing major global hyperscale cloud providers. These contractual commitments account for over 50% of projected total production capacity during 2027 and 2028. The arrangements enhance revenue predictability and enable manufacturing planning aligned with specific customer specifications and volume requirements.
Capital expenditure is expected to increase substantially in the coming year as construction progresses on the initial phase of the Yongin manufacturing complex. Nonetheless, leadership emphasized flexibility to modulate investment intensity based on evolving demand patterns, profitability metrics, product competitiveness assessments, and capital efficiency considerations. This balanced framework facilitates capacity growth while maintaining financial discipline responsive to marketplace dynamics.
SK Hynix disclosed plans to distribute approximately 100 trillion won to shareholders throughout fiscal year 2026. The comprehensive program encompasses a minimum of 30 trillion won in cash dividend payments plus at least 60 trillion won dedicated to share buybacks and subsequent cancellation. Directors approved a third-quarter per-share dividend of 20,000 won, which includes a special payment reflecting proceeds from the company’s Kioxia equity position.
A previously announced 40 trillion won share repurchase has been completed, with cancellation of those shares scheduled imminently. Leadership authorized an additional 20 trillion won buyback program, allocating 10 trillion won for share retirement and reserving the balance for employee compensation purposes. Collectively, historic earnings performance, expanding artificial intelligence memory demand, and significant capital returns constitute the primary catalysts driving the stock’s recent appreciation.
