Moderna has received a bearish call from Citi. Geoff Meacham, an analyst at the investment bank, downgraded the biotech company to Sell from Hold on Wednesday morning.
This downgrade arrives following an extraordinary rally in Moderna’s share price. Since the middle of August, the stock has soared approximately 222%.
The explosive rally was triggered by promising clinical data on intismeran autogene, a cancer vaccine being co-developed by Moderna and Merck. The therapy achieved its primary endpoints in a Phase 3 trial targeting melanoma.
Market participants responded enthusiastically to the announcement. However, Citi believes investor optimism has exceeded what the data supports.
While Meacham lifted his price objective to $80 from $60, this target remains approximately 61% beneath Moderna’s most recent closing price of $203.46.
Following the downgrade announcement, Moderna stock fell 5.7% to $191.96 during Wednesday’s premarket session.
Valuation Concerns Fuel Bearish Call
The foundation of Citi’s bearish thesis centers on valuation metrics. Moderna’s market capitalization has expanded to approximately $80 billion, positioning it alongside Regeneron in market value.
Yet the underlying financial projections tell a different story. Wall Street consensus forecasts suggest Moderna will deliver approximately $5.8 billion in sales and $1.1 billion in net earnings by 2030.
In contrast, Regeneron is projected to achieve $22.7 billion in revenue and $8 billion in net profit during that timeframe. According to Citi, this substantial disparity indicates the market is incorporating significant pipeline upside that remains unproven.
Even under an optimistic scenario granting intismeran a 100% probability of success throughout its major oncology indications, Citi calculates this would justify only approximately $100 per share. To reach $200, the company would need to generate about $13 billion in annual cancer treatment revenueānearly seven times Citi’s current forecast.
Meacham characterized such revenue expectations as implausible.
Critical Data Still Pending
Citi acknowledges the encouraging topline outcomes from the INTerpath-001 clinical trial. The study successfully achieved both its recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival endpoints.
However, detailed efficacy data has not yet been disclosed. Important metrics including hazard ratio, safety profile, and manufacturing scalability remain unreported.
According to Meacham, a hazard ratio near 0.72 would represent a clinically meaningful outcome. Results at 0.65 or better would constitute a decisive success.
As a reference point, an earlier Phase 2 trial demonstrated a five-year hazard ratio of 0.51. This establishes elevated expectations for the forthcoming Phase 3 data release.
Additionally, melanoma exhibits particularly strong responsiveness to immunotherapy relative to other malignancies. Meacham emphasized that positive results in melanoma don’t necessarily translate to success in kidney, lung, or bladder cancers, each presenting distinct biological characteristics and competitive landscapes.
The company plans to present comprehensive data at the European Society for Medical Oncology conference scheduled for late October.
Analyst sentiment on Moderna remains divided. Among 20 analysts tracking the stock, six maintain Buy ratings, the majority recommend Hold, and only a small number have Sell ratings.
The consensus price target among Wall Street analysts stands at $110.44. This represents approximately 45% potential downside from present trading levels.
