Key Highlights
- Payward, Kraken’s parent entity, has formed a strategic alliance with the London Stock Exchange to tokenize equity shares from the top 100 LSE-listed enterprises.
- These digital assets, branded as xStocks, will reach qualified investors across more than 110 nations, excluding UK residents.
- The xStocks platform has already facilitated over $40 billion in aggregate trading activity, with approximately $20 billion processed through blockchain settlement.
- Subject to receiving regulatory clearance, the LSE intends to feature xStocks on LSE 24, its forthcoming continuous trading platform.
- Both organizations are investigating the possibility of launching securities directly on blockchain infrastructure with equivalent legal rights to conventional equity shares.
In a significant development for digital finance, the London Stock Exchange has revealed a strategic collaboration with Payward, which operates the prominent cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, to deliver blockchain-based versions of British equities to the worldwide investment community.
Through this arrangement, equity securities from Britain’s 100 most valuable publicly traded corporations will become available via Payward’s xStocks infrastructure. These digital tokens maintain a one-to-one correspondence with actual shares, ensuring each token represents genuine equity ownership.
Qualified investment professionals spanning over 110 jurisdictions worldwide will gain access to these tokenized securities. However, investors residing within the United Kingdom cannot currently participate in xStocks trading owing to existing regulatory constraints.
xStocks represents an established offering rather than a novel innovation. The platform has already recorded cumulative trading volume exceeding $40 billion, with close to $20 billion of transactions finalized through on-chain settlement mechanisms. The platform currently serves a community of over 200,000 token holders.
Round-the-Clock Trading Platform LSE 24 Eyes Tokenized Securities
This collaboration extends considerably beyond merely adding British equities to the xStocks ecosystem. Pending regulatory authorization, the London Stock Exchange intends to feature xStocks on LSE 24, its upcoming continuous trading facility scheduled to commence operations during the initial six months of 2027.
Julia Hoggett, Chief Executive of the LSE, emphasized that tokenization initiatives must evolve while maintaining the investor protections and legal frameworks inherent to regulated marketplaces. Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Payward, characterized the agreement as bridging traditional regulated financial infrastructure with cutting-edge blockchain technology.
The exchange has been actively pursuing strategies to broaden its investor base, particularly targeting retail participants accustomed to continuous market access. This initiative arrives as the institution faces scrutiny from Elliott Management, an activist investment firm that acquired a position in the company during February 2026.
Investigation Into Native Digital Securities Issuance
In addition to the xStocks initiative, Payward and the London Stock Exchange announced their intention to examine direct securities issuance on blockchain networks. This proposed framework would enable companies to generate securities entirely on distributed ledger infrastructure, with these digital instruments being completely interchangeable with traditional equity shares while preserving identical shareholder rights.
This approach represents a departure from the existing xStocks architecture, where digital tokens are supported by conventionally custodied physical shares.
Payward has been progressively broadening the utility of its xStocks platform. Beginning in July 2026, Kraken enabled qualified international customers beyond American borders to utilize specific xStocks as collateral supporting futures contracts and leveraged trading activities. Eligible assets encompass tokenized representations of prominent corporations including Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla.
The London Stock Exchange is far from isolated in pursuing tokenized equity markets. Deutsche Boerse established a substantial $200 million investment in Kraken this past April. Meanwhile, Robinhood has introduced blockchain-based stock trading across European Union markets, and Coinbase continues advancing its presence within this emerging sector.
Shares of London Stock Exchange Group experienced approximately 2% depreciation during early Tuesday trading sessions in the British capital.
The partnership has not disclosed a precise launch timeline for the initial wave of tokenized UK-listed securities beyond indicating availability within the upcoming weeks.
