Dubbed Starbase Louisiana, the expansive complex will occupy 125,000 acres at what was previously an Exxon-owned location.
According to SpaceX, the installation will encompass five distinct launch complexes, with each featuring dual launchpads. Additional infrastructure includes fuel manufacturing and warehousing, energy generation systems, rocket processing buildings, and maritime port access. Residential developments and potentially an airfield are under consideration.
Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2027. The inaugural rocket launch is scheduled for 2029.
The disclosure arrived through a collaborative statement issued by SpaceX and Louisiana Economic Development authorities. Governor Jeff Landry characterized the initiative as a significant economic driver for regional families and neighborhoods.
SpaceX indicated the venture will generate 3,000 direct employment opportunities across Louisiana throughout a decade. State officials project an additional 8,100 indirect positions will emerge.
In a video statement published on the company’s platform, Elon Musk projected that SpaceX would deliver “probably 10,000 really exciting jobs” to Louisiana.
Implications for Starship Development
The Louisiana facility will function as the principal launching ground for Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation launch vehicle representing the most massive rocket ever constructed. The system incorporates full reusability into its design.
Starship hasn’t yet conducted any commercial operations. The $100 billion figure represents a staged investment distributed across multiple years rather than immediate expenditure.
SpaceX has maintained substantial capital outlays recently. During the initial six months of 2026, the company allocated $28.5 billion toward infrastructure projects, with significant portions directed to computational systems for SpaceXAI, its artificial intelligence division.
Financial performance has demonstrated robust expansion. SpaceX recorded $7.8 billion in second-quarter 2026 revenue, representing 92% growth compared to the previous year. Starlink expanded its active user base to 12 million, achieving a doubling within twelve months.
Environmental Considerations Emerge
The selected location encompasses delicate coastal marshland ecosystems. SpaceX has committed to preserving certain sections undisturbed and coordinating with regulatory bodies regarding habitat conservation.
The organization’s environmental track record presents complexities. In 2024, SpaceX was determined to have breached Clean Water Act regulations at its Texas operations. The company also encountered criticism regarding ecosystem damage following Starship’s inaugural test flight during April 2023.
Earlier this year, Louisiana enacted legislation establishing felony penalties for unauthorized spaceport access while providing economic incentives to aerospace enterprises. Governor Landry approved these measures, which took effect in May.
SpaceX has pledged collaboration with Louisiana authorities on “historic coastal restoration” initiatives to safeguard wetlands surrounding the development.
Louisiana represents SpaceX’s fourth operational launch location. The company has previously established facilities throughout Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
SpaceX presently commands approximately 82% of worldwide commercial launch activity, based on Motley Fool Research analysis.
