Strategy Inc. (MSTR) has experienced a remarkable reversal, transitioning from substantial paper losses to an unrealized gain of $4.7 billion, driven entirely by Bitcoin’s dramatic rebound during the past seven trading days.
At press time, Bitcoin was changing hands at $79,040, following a brief spike above $81,000 earlier Tuesday. This represents a weekly appreciation exceeding 22%, propelling Bitcoin beyond Strategy’s acquisition average of $75,389 per unit.
This critical price threshold fundamentally altered Strategy’s financial standing.
Merely seven days prior, with Bitcoin languishing in the low $60,000 range, the corporation’s cryptocurrency portfolio registered a $9.5 billion paper loss. Once Bitcoin breached the cost basis threshold on August 21, the holdings transitioned into profitable territory for the first time in several months.
The underlying calculations are straightforward yet dramatic. Strategy maintains 840,447 BTC, acquired for a cumulative $63.36 billion. Each $1,000 fluctuation in Bitcoin’s market value translates to roughly $840 million in portfolio value changes. Bitcoin needed only to surpass the mid-$70,000 level for the company’s books to show positive returns.
Interestingly, despite the favorable shift in Bitcoin exposure, MSTR shares declined 1.40% to $120.92 during the trading session.
Massive Swings: From $14B Profit to $8.2B Loss and Recovery
Such dramatic fluctuations have become characteristic of Strategy‘s financial profile. During July, the firm appeared poised for a $14 billion unrealized profit before market corrections wiped out those gains completely, culminating in an $8.2 billion quarterly deficit.
Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has maintained a steadfast position that the organization will retain its Bitcoin holdings indefinitely. This commitment has faced practical challenges, though. Within the last 60 days, Strategy liquidated modest Bitcoin quantities on four occasions specifically to fund dividend payments on its STRC perpetual preferred shares.
During the week concluding August 23, no Bitcoin transactions occurred.
Strengthening Liquid Assets
Alongside its Bitcoin strategy, the company has focused on bolstering its conventional financial reserves. Strategy generated $2.01 billion through equity sales, channeling $300 million toward USD reserves while deploying $136.4 million for STRC preferred stock repurchases.
By August 23, Strategy maintained $5.10 billion in USD reserves alongside $1.59 billion in cash holdings, producing combined USD assets totaling $6.69 billion.
The firm’s comprehensive treasury approach centers on Bitcoin accumulation, financed through convertible debt instruments and preferred equity issuances.
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has suggested that sustained Bitcoin trading above $80,000 may indicate the beginning of another substantial upward movement, potentially driven by U.S. Treasury liquidity patterns.
Bitcoin stood at $79,040 at the time of publication.
