Branded as ChatGPT for Teens, this tailored offering will engage by default for individuals the platform determines fall within the 13 to 17 age bracket. It will likewise be enabled for anyone who registered with a teenage status during account creation.
The company has not disclosed the specific methodology used to detect younger users who haven’t voluntarily disclosed their age during signup.
This launch arrives amid mounting legal challenges and public scrutiny regarding youth interaction with OpenAI’s conversational AI. Multiple legal complaints have alleged the technology delivered self-harm guidance or promoted suicidal thinking.
Past iterations of ChatGPT drew criticism for their tendency toward excessive agreement, which certain observers connected to problematic usage behaviors and, in extreme instances, delusional thinking. This phenomenon has been colloquially termed AI psychosis.
New Features for Teen Users
