Wireless and wireline segments deliver sustained customer expansion
Verizon demonstrated significant momentum across both its wireless and wireline operations throughout the second quarter, driven by consistent subscriber additions and enhanced service revenues. Combined mobility and broadband service revenues climbed 2.8% compared to the prior-year period, reaching approximately $23.4 billion. Management anticipates acceleration to roughly 3.0% growth during the upcoming quarter and approximately 4.0% in the final quarter of 2026.
The telecommunications provider welcomed 184,000 postpaid phone customers during the three-month period. This performance represented the company’s most successful second-quarter consumer postpaid phone result in half a decade. Additionally, Verizon documented 73,000 net additions in its core prepaid segment, marking the eighth straight quarter of positive prepaid customer growth.
Wireline broadband operations maintained their expansion trajectory across both fixed wireless access and fiber-to-the-home platforms. The company secured 348,000 net broadband customer additions, comprising 193,000 fixed wireless subscribers and 155,000 fiber broadband connections. These additions brought the total combined fixed wireless and fiber broadband customer count to approximately 17.1 million at quarter end.
Historic profitability margins counter equipment revenue headwinds
Verizon reported consolidated operating revenues of $34.3 billion for the second quarter. Total revenues decreased 0.7% year-over-year as equipment sales dropped nearly 20%. The equipment decline stemmed from reduced device upgrade activity among existing customers and diminished promotional subsidy spending.
Adjusted EBITDA grew 7.2% versus the comparable prior-year quarter to reach a historic high of $13.7 billion. The adjusted EBITDA margin expanded from 37.1% to 40.1%, establishing a new company record. Simultaneously, adjusted earnings per share advanced 6.6% to $1.30 after removing special items from both periods.
Reported net income fell 22.9% to $3.9 billion as the company recorded $1.8 billion in pre-tax special charges. These items encompassed business disposition losses, asset rationalization expenses, and workforce reduction costs. Consequently, reported earnings per share contracted to $0.92 compared with $1.18 in the year-ago period.
Enhanced cash generation enables increased capital allocation
The telecommunications company produced substantially stronger cash flows during the initial six months of 2026. Operating cash flow increased 9.9% to $18.4 billion, while free cash flow expanded 16.0% to $10.2 billion. Within the second quarter specifically, operating cash flow grew 16.3% and free cash flow jumped 24.4%.
The company simultaneously improved its financial position during the quarter. Total unsecured indebtedness decreased to $136.5 billion from $142.5 billion at the conclusion of the first quarter. Management executed $1.0 billion in share repurchases during the three-month period, elevating year-to-date buyback activity to $3.5 billion.
Based on the stronger operational execution, management raised multiple financial projections for 2026. The company now anticipates mobility and broadband service revenue growth ranging between 2.5% and 3.0%. Management also lifted adjusted EPS guidance to $4.99-$5.04 while forecasting operating cash flow expansion of 2.0% to 4.0% and free cash flow growth of 9.0% to 10.0%.
The telecommunications provider maintained its capital expenditure expectations between $16.0 billion and $16.5 billion. Management projects retail postpaid phone net additions will land within the upper portion of the 750,000 to one million range. These updated projections underscore management’s continued emphasis on subscriber acquisition, network infrastructure investment, and operational efficiency enhancement throughout 2026.
