Tencent Holdings has initiated a controlled beta test of Xiaowei, an artificial intelligence-powered assistant, within WeChat, the super application that serves more than 1.4 billion users across China. Access to this new feature remains restricted to a carefully selected group of early adopters.

Xiaowei accepts instructions through both typed messages and voice input. The assistant enables users to dispatch messages, initiate calls, and explore the diverse array of mini-programs embedded within WeChat’s digital environment — covering everything from meal delivery and transportation services to financial transactions and e-commerce.
The technology behind Xiaowei primarily leverages WeLM, Tencent’s proprietary large language model. When faced with certain types of requests, the system routes queries to DeepSeek for additional computational support, as confirmed by an official statement from Tencent’s customer support division.
WeChat, branded domestically as Weixin, functions as an essential component of everyday existence for countless Chinese citizens. This extensive user base positions it as an exceptionally valuable channel for artificial intelligence deployment — provided Tencent executes the integration effectively.

Attempting to Narrow the AI Innovation Deficit
This product launch represents Tencent’s effort to reduce the competitive distance separating it from key domestic competitors. Earlier in June, industry reports indicated that Tencent was constructing an AI agent with the ability to automate various functions throughout WeChat’s mini-program infrastructure. Monday’s official disclosure validates that this development effort has progressed to real-world user testing.
The competitive landscape among Chinese technology corporations continues to intensify. Industry players are prioritizing the creation of AI agents — intelligent software systems that execute tasks autonomously for users — moving beyond simple question-and-answer chatbot functionality.
Ant Group Simultaneously Trials AI Capabilities in Alipay
Tencent isn’t the only major player pursuing this strategic direction. Ant Group, the financial technology division of Alibaba, is conducting parallel experiments within Alipay, its extensively utilized payment application. That intelligent agent enables users to arrange transportation or place food orders using either voice commands or text-based input.

WeChat has not yet disclosed the complete scope of functions that Xiaowei can perform during this experimental phase. The current trial remains confined to limited participants, and the company has not announced any schedule for expanding availability.
