Key Points
- Shares of TTWO declined from approximately $248 to the low $230 range, erasing around $2.8 billion in market capitalization before partially rebounding to $240.15
- Unauthorized GTA 6 gameplay clips, distributed by an account named “CyberLeek,” appear to show active gameplay from a functional version of the title
- The gaming giant has issued DMCA-based subpoenas targeting Microsoft and Discord in efforts to unmask the source
- Counterfeit GTA 6 downloads circulating on unauthorized platforms have been confirmed to include malicious software
- Rockstar plans to host an authorized GTA 6 showcase via Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET
Shares of Take-Two Interactive experienced a significant decline this week following the emergence of unauthorized Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay clips online, sparking concerns that an individual may possess a functional version of the highly anticipated title prior to its November 19 release date.
Trading at approximately $248.13 before the unauthorized material appeared on August 18, TTWO shares plunged into the low $230 territory before staging a partial recovery to $240.15, leaving roughly $1.5 billion of the original $2.8 billion market capitalization decline still unrealized.

The unauthorized material has been distributed through an account operating under the username “CyberLeek” and features numerous segments displaying previously unreleased gameplay sequences. One particular segment depicts the character Jason using weapon fire to form the word “LEEK” on a surface, which industry observers at Forbes suggest indicates active control of the software rather than simple redistribution of archived internal materials.
Additional compromised content purportedly includes overhead perspectives of Vice City and supplementary gameplay sequences. Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two have issued official statements regarding the origin or complete extent of the security incident.
The breach also carries cryptocurrency implications. Marketing materials associated with portions of the leaked content have promoted a memecoin, suggesting a monetary incentive behind the unauthorized release.
Legal Action Targets Microsoft and Discord Platforms
On August 20, Take-Two submitted subpoena applications through the Southern District of New York. The publisher is requiring Microsoft and Discord to provide documentation associated with accounts implicated in distributing and circulating the unauthorized footage.
Microsoft has been directed to furnish all documentation connected to the “cyberleek” identity by September 4, encompassing registration email addresses, IP locations, telephone numbers, associated accounts, and any GTA-related materials housed within OneDrive storage.
Discord is subject to identical timing requirements and must supply information on accounts linked to multiple servers, including those connected to usernames such as “CYBERLEEK,” “CINEMATICROCKSTAR,” and “Surfer24k.” The legal demand also references servers tied to prominent GTA 5 content creator Matthew “Matt” Judge, recognized online as DarkViperAU.
Judge responded to the development on X, stating he possesses no information regarding the leaks and expressed bewilderment at his mention in the subpoena. Rockstar has not initiated direct communication with him.
Security Threats for Gaming Community
A pressing danger has surfaced for the gaming community. Fraudulent GTA 6 downloads purporting to contain the leaked software are proliferating across unauthorized download platforms, with confirmed reports indicating certain files harbor malicious code. No authenticated public distribution of any functional build exists.
Historical Perspective on Previous Breaches
The 2022 GTA 6 security incident, which resulted in approximately 90 development clips being released publicly, did not derail the project’s progress. Take-Two maintained its development timeline and has subsequently confirmed a standard retail price of $79.99 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
Take-Two has scheduled an authorized presentation. A Rockstar GTA 6 showcase is planned for broadcast on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, with subsequent availability through Rockstar’s official distribution channels.
