Sberbank has obtained regulatory authorization from the Bank of Russia to deliver custody solutions for Bitcoin and various digital currencies. This approval enables the nation’s leading financial institution to maintain records of digital currency ownership and facilitate account-to-account transfers. The institution confirmed these services will integrate into its current online banking infrastructure.
Clients will access crypto services through SberBank Online, SberInvestments, and SberBusiness. Sberbank confirmed there are no plans for a standalone application. The institution will initiate operations with a select customer cohort before broadening availability.
Regulatory Framework Expansion for Digital Currency
Russian authorities have accelerated the development of comprehensive infrastructure for cryptocurrency trading and safekeeping. President Vladimir Putin enacted legislation this month addressing digital currencies and digital rights. This development aligns with international shifts in crypto custody standards, including the US SEC crypto custody proposal unveiled last week.
The Bank of Russia published preliminary regulations for cryptocurrency trading in July. State Duma legislators have advanced comprehensive digital asset legislation throughout 2026. These regulatory measures establish operational standards for banks, exchanges, and companies seeking to provide cryptocurrency services domestically.
Integration Within Current Banking Infrastructure
Sberbank initially revealed its intentions in July to introduce a Bitcoin and cryptocurrency wallet by December. The bank simultaneously outlined digital asset custody capabilities. The recent authorization advances these objectives while maintaining client access through platforms that already incorporate bank identification verification and transaction oversight.
Additional financial institutions are pursuing regulated pathways for digital asset management. Rain’s federal trust bank application in the United States represents another recent development. Sberbank will function under Russian regulatory oversight and commence with a measured deployment before widening customer access.
Payment Restrictions Remain in Effect
The regulatory approval does not authorize clients to utilize Bitcoin or alternative cryptocurrencies for commercial transactions within Russia. Russian legislation has prohibited cryptocurrency payments since 2022. Meanwhile, institutions continue bridging toward conventional finance, with the OKX expansion beyond crypto trading demonstrating comparable momentum internationally.
Sberbank now possesses authorization to deliver custody and transfer capabilities within Russia’s emerging regulatory architecture. The institution stated clients will utilize established banking interfaces rather than separate cryptocurrency products. President Putin has previously stated Bitcoin cannot be halted, while Russian regulators continue constructing frameworks governing individual and corporate digital asset usage.
