Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, has issued a fresh call for investors to allocate capital toward Bitcoin and gold as a hedge against America’s escalating debt emergency.
In a Friday LinkedIn update, Dalio outlined his concerns about the nation’s mounting debt burden, cautioning that unsustainable levels may soon force the government into difficult choices with far-reaching economic implications.
Investment Strategy: Bitcoin and Gold Over Traditional Debt
The hedge fund titan recommended investors reduce exposure to traditional debt instruments like bonds while increasing allocations to gold and “a bit of Bitcoin.” His suggested gold allocation ranges from 10% to 15% of total portfolio value as a risk-reduction strategy.
“My guess is that [a U.S. debt crisis] will come in three years, give or take two, if the course we’re on is not changed,” Dalio stated.
These remarks arrived as America’s national debt breached the $40 trillion threshold earlier this week. Bitcoin surged in response, climbing toward $80,000 from approximately $63,000 just days earlier.
Dalio’s stance on Bitcoin has evolved over time. In 2022, he characterized a 1% to 2% Bitcoin allocation as “reasonable.” By July 2025, he disclosed holding “some, but not much” Bitcoin and recommended up to 15% combined exposure to Bitcoin and gold.
Despite his recent recommendations, he has maintained skepticism about Bitcoin’s ability to replace gold as a reliable store of value, citing vulnerabilities related to quantum computing and privacy issues.
America’s Debt Crisis Reaches Critical Juncture
According to Dalio, the U.S. government’s fiscal situation has reached a critical inflection point. He emphasized that delaying action until economic conditions deteriorate would significantly complicate any resolution efforts.
“When the economy is in a contraction, the government’s borrowing needs increase a lot,” he explained.
Bitcoin’s recent price surge coincided with the U.S. Treasury’s announcement to expand its debt buyback program by at least double. This decision followed the 30-year Treasury yield reaching its highest point since 2007.
Escalating tensions in the U.S.-Iran conflict are compounding economic pressures, driving energy costs and inflation higher. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has committed to maintaining price stability despite increasing pressure for interest rate adjustments.
According to prediction market platform Polymarket, the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike has climbed above 50%, reflecting the central bank’s challenging position between controlling inflation and supporting economic expansion.
Dalio acknowledged that political transitions and geopolitical developments, including armed conflicts, can either accelerate or postpone a debt crisis timeline.
With an estimated net worth exceeding $15 billion, Dalio’s investment perspectives carry significant weight throughout global financial markets.
