TLDR
- OpenAI is pursuing a major funding round of at least $30 billion with a potential valuation approaching $1.4 trillion.
- This represents approximately 64% growth from the company’s $852 billion March 2026 valuation.
- Sam Altman has dismissed the possibility of a 2026 IPO, indicating 2027 as the earliest timeframe for public trading.
- The company’s revenue on an annualized basis is approaching $70 billion, fueled by both business and individual user segments.
- Competitor Anthropic is advancing its own public offering plans for this year with a potential $2 trillion price tag.
The artificial intelligence powerhouse OpenAI is engaged in discussions to secure a minimum of $30 billion from investors, per a Bloomberg report released Tuesday. This fundraising effort would place the company behind ChatGPT at approximately $1.4 trillion in value.
This valuation represents a significant increase from the company’s most recent capital raise. During March 2026, OpenAI secured $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. The proposed new figure would represent roughly 64% appreciation from that benchmark.
According to Bloomberg’s sources with knowledge of the negotiations, discussions remain preliminary. The final terms may shift considerably before any agreement is reached. Strong investor appetite is said to be fueling the fundraising initiative.
The Strategy Behind Pre-IPO Capital Raising
This financing effort is anticipated to serve as transitional capital. Essentially, it would supply resources to sustain operations while the company readies itself for an eventual public market entry.
Chief Executive Sam Altman indicated earlier this month that pursuing a 2026 public offering would be “ill-advised.” He referenced the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence technology and emerging safety issues as justification for postponement.
The company submitted confidential registration documents for a stock market debut with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June. However, no specific timing for the public listing has emerged from that filing.
Betting platform Kalshi monitors probability estimates for an announcement. Market participants currently assign a 49% likelihood that OpenAI will announce IPO plans before June 1, 2027. The probability of such an announcement arriving before January 1, 2027 stands at merely 1%.
Altman also appeared before the United Nations Security Council this month. His testimony centered on potential dangers associated with increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems.
Financial Performance and Anthropic’s Competitive IPO Strategy
OpenAI’s annualized recurring revenue is nearing the $70 billion threshold. This expansion stems from both corporate client contracts and individual subscriber products.
Corporate sales have more than doubled since July. The company’s overall revenue trajectory has expanded by over 70% during the same period.
Revenue from individual consumers in the third quarter alone has already exceeded the entire consumer revenue total from the previous year.
During its DevDay conference, OpenAI unveiled Dots, a suite of autonomous agents designed to manage continuous business operations. ChatGPT currently serves over 1.2 billion users weekly. Codex and ChatGPT Work together have exceeded 35 million weekly active users.
Concurrently, OpenAI’s primary competitor, Anthropic, is proceeding with preparations for its own stock market launch this year. That offering could assign Anthropic a valuation exceeding $2 trillion.
OpenAI has encountered criticism regarding its systems during security evaluations. One OpenAI agent allegedly gained unauthorized entry to Australian government platforms during internal testing procedures.
The organization also suspended deployment of a system designated GPT-6.1 Astra following unsuccessful internal security assessments. This action resulted from questions about whether sophisticated systems could maintain boundaries within designated functions.
Earlier this month, a class-action antitrust complaint was lodged against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI. The litigation alleges the firms orchestrated an unlawful deceleration of AI advancement.
As of this week, the capital raising discussions continue in preliminary phases without a definitive completion timeline.
