The internet is jam-packed with money-making opportunities. Whether it’s filling out an online survey or blogging about your travels – options are plentiful. With that said, you often need to put in a lot of time and effort just to make a couple of bucks, so you need to explore whether or not these so-called earning opportunities are worthwhile.
A rather new phenomenon in this respect is that of Mistplay – a mobile application that claims you can make money in return for playing games. You accumulate points as you progress through in-game levels, and when you get your tally to a certain threshold, you can then exchange them for real-world rewards.
Sound too good to be true? Well, that’s exactly what we intend to find out. In our Mistplay Review, we’ll explore the ins and outs of how the app works, who is eligible, how much you can earn, and crucially – whether or not it’s worth your time.
What is Mistplay?
Launched in 2017 by Henri-Charles Machalani – Mistplay is a mobile application that allows you to earn rewards in exchange for playing video games. The overarching concept is that mobile gaming developers need to get their application out to the market to gauge public perception.
With the mobile app space nothing short of oversaturated, one such angle that developers take is to use a reward platform like Mistplay. With that said, the games-for-rewards process is not exclusive just to Mistplay.
On the contrary, a number of leading rewards platforms – for example, Swagbucks, offers opportunities to earn points via mobile gaming.
Nevertheless, upon downloading the application and opening an account, you will then be presented with an extensive selection of newly created games. You might earn points just for playing the game, and then earn additional points as you progress and reach certain targets.
As you accumulate more and more points, it is then hoped that you reach a cash-out level. This means that you can exchange your points for a real-world reward – such as an Amazon or iTunes gift card.
On the one hand, Mistplay is potentially ideal if you have a passion for gaming, or you find that you have a lot of free time and you want to earn a bit of extra cash. On the other hand – and as we cover in more detail further down, it can take an incredible amount of time to turn your efforts into rewards. When you start factoring in your time-to-earnings ratio, you might decide that Mistplay isn’t worth your while.
Am I Eligible With Mistplay?
Before going any further, it makes sense to explore whether or not you are eligible to use Mistplay.
Location
First and foremost, you need to be based in a country that Mistplay supports. At the time of writing, this includes the US, Canada, Singapore, and a good number of European countries.
The only way to assess whether or not you are eligible is to head over to the Google Play Store. The store will then let you know whether or not you are eligible – based on the country you are accessing it from.
Smartphone
You will, of course, need to have a suitable smartphone to use Mistplay, not least because you will be playing games. You don’t need to have a super-expensive device, but it does need to have the capacity to download and install apps.
Android Only
iOS devotees – unfortunately, your device is not supported by Mistplay. As a result, you will need to have an Android device to be eligible. The good news is that Mistplay does note on its website that support for iOS is on the way. However, it doesn’t give us an indication of when this is likely to be.
Getting Started With Mistplay
If you meet the eligibility criteria outlined above, great! We now need to explore how the set-up process works.
Step 1: Download and Install the Mobile App
Mistplay is an app-only platform, so you will need to head over to the Google Play store and elect to download it.
Step 2: Amend Phone Settings
Once you have installed the Misplay app on to your phone, you will then need to make some adjustments to your device settings. The reason for this is that Mistplay is required to track your progress as and when you play games, or when you reach certain levels.
As such, ensure you do the following:
- Turn Off Power-Saving Mode If your Android phone operates on 5.0 Lollipop, then you should have a pre-installed battery saver feature. This kicks in when the phone is running low on battery and by default, this is usually at the 5% mark. Turning this off is easy. Simply scroll down to bring up the notification shade, and click on the ‘Turn Off Battery Saver’ button.
- Display App Above Other Apps Running You will also need to ensure that your Misplay app gets priority over other apps that are running. To do this, scroll down to bring up your notification shade, and click on the settings button (the cog). Next, click on ‘Apps & Notifications’, followed by ‘Notifications’. You will then need to click on ‘Show System’ and look out for the Mistplay app. Finally, ensure the button is activated so that it displays over other applications.
If you don’t make the required adjustments, you stand the risk of getting less points than you are entitled to.
Step 3: Open the App and Create an Account
Once you have adjusted your phone settings, you can then proceed to open the Mistplay app. You will then be prompted to create an account. You can only do this through a Gmail or a Facebook account.
As soon as you activate your account, you will then be able to view the long-list of games currently available at Mistplay. Take note, the games that you are able to view is determined by the country that you are accessing the app from. This is because some developers create their games for specific geographical markets – like the US.
How to Earn Rewards at Mistplay
When it comes to earning rewards at Mistplay, you can do this in three ways.
Playing a Game
Firstly, when you find a game that you like the look of, you will earn a fixed number of points when you play it for a minimum amount of time. In the vast majority of cases, this averages 2-5 minutes, although some of the games that we came across required more time.
If you’re planning to earn the rewards without actually playing the game, this is technically possible. However, the timer is based on the app being open. Other words, you will earn points on the proviso that the app is actually running, and not on screen lock.
In terms of how many points you will earn, this will vary from game-to-game. You get to view this before you play though, which is why it’s always worth targeting games with a higher reward first.
Reaching Gaming Targets
Developers know that some users will simply open the game, reach the minimum time-frame to earn the reward, and then close the application. As a result, you stand the chance of earning much more if you play the game for longer and thus – reach certain targets.
For example, a number of games at Mistplay utilize a level system. Each and every time you complete a new level, your points tally will continue to increase. In doing so, the developers know that you are spending sufficient time testing the game out, which is exactly what they want.
Rating and Reviews
While developers are hopeful that you will spend time testing their games out, what they also crave is feedback. After all, the overarching purpose of putting their games on the Mistplay platform and paying out rewards is to gauge what the general public think.
As such, when you decide to exit the game, you will be given the opportunity to give your two cents’ worth. If you’re strapped for time, you will earn some points simply for rating the game. However, if you want to maximize your earnings, it’s well worth leaving a written review.
It’s worth being completely honest here, as you won’t earn extra points for telling the developers how great the game in question is. On the contrary, they are looking for constructive feedback. In doing so, they can go back to the drawing board and make the necessary tweaks if certain issues have been identified.
How Does the Mistplay Points System Work?
Mistplay utilizes a points system that covers three key metrics – Units, Game Experience Points (GXP), and Player Experience Points (PXP). This three-tier system can appear somewhat confusing at first glance, so let’s explore what each term actually means.
Units
The most important metric in terms of earning rewards is that of your ‘units’. In a nutshell, units are what you earn when you play a game, complete a level, or leave a review.
As you accumulate more and more units, you will inch closer that all-important redemption threshold. Once you do, you will then be able to exchange your units for real-world rewards.
You can see the number of units that you earned from a game as it clearly displayed. Moreover, you can check the total number of units that you have accumulated overall from within your account portal.
Game Experience Points (GXP)
Your GXP operates like a multiplier, as it allows you to accumulate more points from a game. In other words, Mistplay will reward you for spending long periods of time playing a specific game.
For example, let’s say that you are playing Clash of Clans. You’ve been playing for a couple of hours and you have successfully reached Level 5. As you continue to play the game further, the more your GXP tally will increase.
As and when it does, this translates into more units – which in turn, allows you to reach the rewards cashout threshold faster.
Player Experience Points (PXP)
When it comes to your PXP, this relates to your current level status. This is not related to the specific game you are playing. On the contrary, it’s your level on Mistplay. You can view this at the top left-hand corner of your main account dashboard. Crucially, every time you reach a new level, you will earn more PXP. As you do, this translates into units.
Note: As you can see from the above – PXP, GXP, and units are all interlinked. The common denominator is that the more you play – not in just terms of time, but progression within each game, the more you can earn in rewards.
How do I Earn Rewards at Mistplay?
So, now that you know how you earn units, and that units are what you need to earn rewards, we now need to explore what each unit translates to in terms of dollars and cents.
Firstly, the most important figure that you need to be made aware of is that:
1,500 Mistplay points amount to a $5 gift card
So, how difficult is it to reach that 1,500 points milestone? Well, the number of points that you will earn for playing a game can start at just 20 points. This is for doing the bare minimum – i.e playing the game for 2-5 minutes. Once you meet the minimum time requirement, you’ll be notified while playing the game.
You might then decide to exit the game and target another one, or remain within the game with the view of earning more points. As noted above, the latter will allow you to increase your PXP and GXP points. You can also increase your points tally by leaving a review once you leave the game.
With that being said, some users have noted that they are able to earn up to 200 points per gaming session. There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to how much time is required to earn 200 points from a single game, as there are too many variables in place. For example, some gaming developers will pay more than others, and some games are easier to level up than others.
Nevertheless, a reward of 200 points in dollars and cents would amount to a real-world sum of $0.66. You would then need to repeat this feat 7 ½ times to meet the 1,500 points minimum cashout threshold.
What can I Exchange my Mistplay Units for?
Once you do hit the 1,500 unit target, you will be able to exchange your units for a $5 gift card.
You will get to choose from the following options:
- Google Play Gift Cards
- Amazon Gift Cards
- iTunes Gift Cards
- PlayStation Gift Cards
- GameStop Gift Cards
Unlike other platforms in the rewards space, it is disappointing that there is no option to exchange your units for cash. For example, platforms like Swagbucks offer a Paypal voucher as an option, which is as good as cash.
When do I get my Gift Card at Mistplay?
Once you reach 1,500 points, you will need to click on the ‘Shop’ button. You will then see the list of gift cards that you have available to you. Once you make the exchange, Mistplay notes that the gift card should be sent to you within 48 hours.
This will be delivered as an e-gift card via your email inbox, which is industry standard in the rewards arena. You can check the status of your gift card delivery by clicking on the ‘Gift Box” button at the top-right hand corner of the shop page.
If you still haven’t received the voucher within 48 hours, you will need to contact customer support. Make sure you include your username and email address in your message – which needs to match the details you provided when you first signed up.
When are Units Credited?
What we do like about Mistplay is that your earned units will always be credited instantly. For example, if you play a game for 2 minutes to earn the 20 point minimum, as soon as you exit the game this will show up in your Mistplay balance.
This is in stark contrast to other rewards platforms, who often make you wait a couple of days before the points are credited. In certain cases, you are then forced to contact customer support when points have not been given.
Is Mistplay Worth Joining?
In reality, the amount of rewards that you can earn at Mistplay is quite small – especially when you factor in the time and effort required. In fact, if you’re based in a supported country, this is likely to be well below the minimum wage.
As a result, it might not make sense to use Mistplay if your sole aim is to earn cash. There are lots of other money-making opportunities available in the online space that pay significantly more. On the contrary, Misplay is ideal if you have a passion for games.
Think of it like this. You will be able to test newly created games before they reach the public market. And in return, not only will you get to play these games for free, but you’ll earn a couple of bucks for the pleasure.
After all, if you find a few games that you actually enjoy playing, your rewards will increase at a much faster rate when you factor in the PXP and GXP level-ups.
How do I Contact Customer Support?
If you’ve previously used a rewards site, then you will know first-hand that customer support is typically lacking. This is no different in the case of Mistplay.
There are no live chat or telephone support options, so you’ll need to send an email to support@mistplay.com. Alternatively, you can click on the ‘Submit a Request’ button from within your Mistplay account to raise a support ticket.
In most cases, you will be waiting at least a few working days before you get a response – potentially more. As such, it might be worth browsing through the platform’s FAQ page, which you can access via the main Mistplay desktop website. It’s fairly comprehensive, and as long as your query isn’t related to a late e-gift card delivery, most issues are covered.
Public Reviews of Mistplay
On top of reading in-depth reviews, an excellent way to gauge the credibility of a rewards program is to explore reviews and ratings available in the public domain. In this respect, an obvious starting point is to assess the situation at Google Play – as this is the only way that you can actually obtain the Mistplay app.
At the time of writing, the app has an excellent rating of 4.3/5. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, this is based across more than 89,000 individual reviews. This indicates that users are more than happy with what Mistplay offers.
With that said, not all users at Google Play are satisfied with the Mistplay rewards program, so we spent a bit of time exploring why this is. Ultimately, the main issue that pops up in the reviews section is with regards to the amount of money that you can earn.
In other words, a number of users make reference to the sheer amount of time that you need to spend using the app just to reach the $5 threshold. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the amount of money that developers are going to be prepared to pay out is always going to be limited.
Other than that, the general consensus is that Mistplay is a perfectly legitimate way to earn a few dollars in return for testing out newly created mobile games.
Is Mistplay a Scam?
In short, no – Mistplay is not a scam. The rewards platform has been operational for just under three years now, and there is no reason to suggest that application is anything but credible. Crucially, this is highlighted by the app’s excellent reviews and ratings at the Google Play store.
Mistplay Review: The Verdict?
In summary, Mistplay does exactly what it says on the tin. By downloading and installing the mobile app onto your Android phone, you stand the chance of making a bit of extra money in return for playing games. Sure, you won’t make anywhere near enough to quit your job – or even supplement your income on a part-time basis.
But, if you’ve got a passion for mobile gaming, or you’ve got a bit of spare time cometh the evening or weekend, then Mistplay is well worth considering. It is possible that as the app grows, more and more gaming developers will turn to Mistplay.
Moreover, if the application can attract large developers with deeper pockets, it is hoped that the reward structure will one day become more generous. For those of you missing out because you don’t have an Android device, Mistplay is in the process of releasing an iOS version of the app. This has the potential to take the platform’s user base to a whole new level, so keep an eye on the Misplay website for an eventual release date.
