In a nutshell, Getsafe is an app-based insurance company that allows you to complete the entire contents coverage process via your mobile phone. For those unaware, contents insurance is taken out to cover the possessions of your home.
This could include anything from your 65 inch TV, to the invaluable rug that you imported from India. Either way, contents insurance typically covers damage, theft, and loss.
The overarching tagline of Getsafe is that it offers “insurance without paperwork”. Instead, the end-to-end process of applying, paying, and claiming on a policy can be done with ease. As such, there is no requirement to fill out any complicated documents or speak with an advisor over the phone – just how it should be in the digital era.
The company itself was first launched in 2015 in Germany, and it entered the UK market in early 2020. Additional markets will be targeted in the near future. The team at Getsafe have partnered with a number of notable underwriters – including that of AXA, Munich Re, and Hiscox.
What Does Getsafe Insurance Cover?
As noted above, Getsafe is only involved in the contents insurance space. With that said, you still need to have a firm understanding of what you are likely to be covered for prior to proceeding with an application.
Here’s what you need to know:
If opting for a standard policy at Getsafe, coverage will apply on three fronts. First and foremost, the possessions in your home will be covered in the event that they are stolen. For example, if your home was burgled and the perpetrators took off with a number of valuables, you would be able to make a claim on your policy.
Similarly, any damage caused by a burglary would also be covered – for example, the costs of replacing smashed windows or a tampered door lock. The standard policy will also cover household items in the event of a fire, certain weather conditions, or water damage.
Furthermore, you will also be covered on any visitor’s possessions while the items are in your primary residence. For example, if a family member left their expensive laptop in your home, and the device was subsequently stolen. Finally, the standard policy also covers personal liability. This covers you if a third-party injured themselves while in your property.
On top of the above, Getsafe offers a couple of addons – which naturally, will increase the overall cost of your policy.
Accidental damage typically covers you in the event that a “non-deliberate” action results in damage to the contents of your property. For example, while you would likely be able to claim if you accidentally smashed your 3D TV while attempting to move it into another room, you wouldn’t be covered if the TV had simply run its course.
Similarly, you’d likely be covered if you spilt red wine on your vintage carpet, but you wouldn’t if the carpet needs replacing because of long-term wear and tear. As is the case with most insurance policies, the final decision is ultimately up to Getsafe.
If you’re looking for the full-hog, Getsafe also offers personal possessions coverage as an additional addon. This is where your personal possessions are covered outside of the home.
For example, this is likely to include a bicycle that was stolen while locked-up outside of the supermarket, or the theft of your laptop while you were working in your local coffee shop.
How Much Does Getsafe Cost?
As seamless a process as Getsafe offers, you still need to explore what the underlying cost of coverage is like. The headline rate published by the platform is a standard policy fee of £4.24 per month. Once again, if you opt for one, two, or both of the extensions, you’ll end up paying more.
However, as is the case with all insurance providers, the specific fee will be based on a range of variables.
For example, you’ll need to state how many claims you’ve made in the past three years, as well as the postcode that your home is based in. Regarding the latter, certain areas will come at a higher monthly cost if the location has a higher crime rate.
As such, the only way to find out your personal rate is to go through the application process – which we’ve briefly outlined below.
How to get Started With Getsafe
If you’re keen to find out how much Getsafe is going to cost you, you’ll need to spend a few minutes completing the application form. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Download the Getsafe App
The easiest way to get started is to download the Getsafe app – if you use our link you aill automatically get a £15 credit on your account.
Step 2: Previous Claims and Post Code
You will now be asked the number of contents insurance claims you have made over the past three years. You can choose from 0, 1, or 2+. You’ll then need to enter the postcode of the home that you will like to insure.
Step 3: Total Replacement Value
Getsafe will now ask for the total replacement value of all the contents in your home. The figure needs to be between £5,000 and £75,000. Obtaining an exact figure at this stage is going to be beyond the realms of reality, so do your best to provide a reliable estimate.
Take note, contents include any household items and personal possessions that are kept within your home.
Any items worth more than £2,000 will need to be elaborated on, with the maximum value per item capped at £4,000.
Step 4: Choose Add Ons and Review Price
Finally, you’ll then need to state whether you want to add extensions to your coverage – such as personal possessions. You’ll then be able to view your quote.
We were quoted £5.06 per month, with excess set at £220. Moreover, accidental damage was offered for free.
This price was based on:
- No contents insurance claims in the past three years
- N20 London postcode
- No items worth more than £2,000
- Total contents value of £15,000
- No personal possessions cover
Making a Claim at Getsafe
When it comes to making a claim at Getsafe, the process is just as seamless as submitting an application. You can file a claim instantly via the app, with Getsafe noting that they will send the money “as soon as possible”.
Getsafe Review: The Verdict?
In summary, it would be nice if the Getsafe website was a bit clearer on the products it offers. By this, we mean that you are required to do quite a bit of digging around to find the information you need – especially with regards to what is and what isn’t covered.
Nevertheless, the platform is a notable option if you are looking to streamline the contents insurance process. In fact, the entire application takes just a few minutes, so you can do-away with never-ending documents and telephone calls.
Crucially, with prices starting at just £4.24 per month, Getsafe allows you to cover your homely possessions without breaking the bank.
