Australian authorities are intensifying enforcement against crypto ATM operators to combat financial crime.
Australia’s financial intelligence agency has taken decisive action against Cryptolink, imposing a three-month suspension that has forced the immediate closure of 96 cryptocurrency ATMs nationwide. The enforcement action stems from persistent violations of reporting requirements and anti-money laundering protocols. Regulators determined that the company’s ongoing compliance failures pose an unacceptable threat to financial system integrity.
Regulator Takes Decisive Action Against Cryptolink
AUSTRAC said the operator neglected to file mandatory threshold transaction reports even after facing previous regulatory sanctions. Additionally, the company disregarded a statutory notice demanding information from the watchdog. These violations prompted the suspension order that took effect on August 9.
The affected business runs a network of cryptocurrency kiosks that enable users to convert physical currency into digital tokens. Its fleet of 96 machines operates throughout major Australian metropolitan areas, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The suspension prevents the firm from conducting any registered digital asset exchange activities for the duration of the ban.
AUSTRAC previously intervened against Cryptolink in October 2025 regarding different compliance shortcomings. Regulators discovered delayed transaction filings and inadequacies in the company’s money laundering and terrorism financing risk evaluations. Following that action, Cryptolink agreed to an enforceable undertaking and settled an infringement penalty of A$56,340.
Fresh Violations Trigger Complete Operations Halt
While Cryptolink fulfilled the terms of its previous undertaking, subsequent reporting breaches generated renewed regulatory alarm. AUSTRAC emphasized concerns about the operator’s management of high-risk financial movements through its cryptocurrency kiosk infrastructure. The watchdog ultimately concluded that allowing continued service provision created excessive regulatory hazards.
Transaction threshold reports serve as critical tools for Australian law enforcement to identify substantial cash flows potentially linked to illicit activities. Cryptocurrency ATMs present heightened exposure because they facilitate immediate conversion of banknotes into blockchain-based assets. Consequently, regulators demand that providers implement robust safeguards, documentation systems, and identity verification procedures.
AUSTRAC will maintain active oversight of Cryptolink during the suspension period and ensure full compliance with the operational prohibition. The business cannot leverage its registered authorization to provide the affected cryptocurrency ATM services. Restoration of operating privileges will require demonstrating satisfactory adherence to regulatory standards.
Authorities Intensify Cryptocurrency ATM Regulation
Australian regulators have strengthened cryptocurrency ATM oversight since establishing a specialized digital currency enforcement unit in late 2024. AUSTRAC has prioritized enforcement against providers demonstrating insufficient controls around money laundering, fraud schemes, and scam prevention. The agency has also expanded direct supervision of businesses facilitating cash-to-cryptocurrency conversions.
Lawmakers implemented a A$5,000 transaction ceiling for crypto ATM deposits and withdrawals beginning in June 2025. Service providers now face enhanced customer verification obligations and must prominently display fraud awareness notices. These measures aim to diminish criminal exploitation while safeguarding consumers from deceptive schemes.
The country maintains one of the most extensive cryptocurrency ATM infrastructures throughout the Asia-Pacific territory. AUSTRAC has countered industry expansion with rigorous oversight, aggressive enforcement measures, and strengthened transfer reporting mandates. The Cryptolink suspension demonstrates that persistent reporting deficiencies now result in immediate revocation of operational privileges.
