Amazon (AMZN) shares climbed 2.70% during Friday’s trading session, closing at $260.92 with a $6.86 gain, even as news emerged of additional workforce cuts. The tech giant eliminated nearly 1,000 roles across multiple business divisions in three countries. These reductions represent a continuation of Amazon’s broader restructuring initiative that previously encompassed roughly 30,000 positions.
New Round of Job Eliminations Hits Retail Division
Workers at Amazon facilities across the United States, India, and the United Kingdom began receiving termination notifications this week. Business Insider reported that employees received electronic messages on Tuesday informing them their roles had been eliminated. The cuts targeted multiple departments within the retail division, including marketplace support, customer service, and engineering functions.
Impacted workers turned to an internal Slack workspace with nearly 37,000 members to share details about the reductions. Conversations within the channel focused on which teams were affected and questions regarding the scope of the restructuring. Employees also discussed severance terms, opportunities for internal transfers, and concerns about potential future eliminations.
In a statement to Business Insider, Amazon acknowledged eliminating a small number of roles, particularly within its Stores business unit. The company attributed the workforce adjustments to organizational optimization and efficiency improvements. Amazon indicated it would offer transition assistance to employees whose positions were eliminated.
Earlier Restructuring Initiative Affected Roughly 30,000 Roles
The recent job eliminations follow Amazon’s January disclosure of approximately 16,000 workforce reductions spanning its global footprint. Executive leadership described plans to streamline management hierarchies and eliminate redundant administrative layers. The restructuring initiative also emphasized increasing individual accountability and enhancing operational decision-making throughout the organization.
Amazon had earlier revealed plans in October 2025 to cut an additional 14,000 corporate positions, broadening the scope of its workforce optimization program. Combined, these two major announcements encompassed roughly 30,000 roles, equivalent to approximately 1% of the company’s reported 1.56 million workforce. The reductions touched Amazon Web Services, retail divisions, Prime Video operations, and corporate HR departments.
The People Experience and Technology organization also experienced workforce adjustments as part of the comprehensive restructuring plan. Rather than concentrating cuts within a single segment, the company distributed reductions across various major operations. Throughout the restructuring period, Amazon maintained capital allocation toward technology innovation and strategic business priorities.
AI Recruitment Efforts Continue Alongside Workforce Cuts
Amazon has simultaneously pursued talent acquisition focused on artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure specialists. Recent reports indicated the company reached out to former employees, including individuals impacted by previous layoffs. The recruitment campaign specifically targets professionals with backgrounds in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and adjacent technical disciplines.
Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS Vice President overseeing the artificial intelligence agent division, spearheads the company’s reengagement program. The initiative, known as Swami’s Boomerang Reengagement Initiative, seeks to reconnect Amazon with previously employed technical talent. This recruitment program operates concurrently with the company’s ongoing workforce optimization and reduction measures.
Amazon’s simultaneous workforce reductions and targeted hiring campaigns illustrate distinct strategic shifts across its business portfolio. The company continues optimizing staffing levels within retail operations while aggressively pursuing specialized expertise for AI initiatives. The latest workforce adjustments affect multiple geographic markets and span numerous organizational divisions throughout the company’s global structure.
