Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
Bernstein SocGen equity analyst Robin Zhu recognized shareholder concerns and reduced his price objective on BABA from $180 to $165, representing an approximately 8% decrease. However, he preserved his Outperform recommendation on the shares.
Zhu noted it is “not hard to sympathise” with market participants who view the transaction unfavorably. The primary question remains clear: what justifies securing additional capital when the enterprise maintains $30.7 billion in net cash reserves?
The capital raise structure includes a primary placement of 710 million shares offered at a discount to market prices. In a display of conviction, Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai acquired 720,000 Hong Kong-listed shares immediately following the announcement, demonstrating leadership’s belief in the strategic vision.
Capital expenditures at Alibaba surged 75% on a year-over-year basis to roughly $10.07 billion in the most recent reporting period, underscoring the magnitude of its artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout.
Bernstein Projects Quicker Return on AI Investments
Notwithstanding investor reservations, Zhu’s financial analysis indicates the AI capital deployment may generate returns more rapidly than market expectations suggest.
Bernstein constructed a data-center financial model centered on Alibaba’s current Zhenwu 810E processor. The analysis projects a three-year return on capital expenditure for this chip architecture.
The more advanced M890 chip demonstrates even more attractive economics. Commercial rollout commenced in August, with market intelligence suggesting a 2.5-year payback timeline.
Market pricing for server rental capacity has demonstrated consistent upward movement in recent months, signaling robust demand for AI computational resources.
Conversations with major enterprise customers further indicate supply constraints persist, supporting the investment thesis for continued capacity expansion.
Bernstein’s findings incorporated input from Alibaba management, AI research laboratories, and industry sources throughout the AI and chip supply ecosystem.
InvestingPro analytics confirm Alibaba maintains a net cash balance sheet position, which bolsters its financial stability notwithstanding the additional capital raise.
