Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
Analyst estimates point to quarterly revenue reaching RMB 268.5 billion ($38.63 billion), which would mark an 8% year-over-year increase. However, substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and aggressive consumer incentive programs are anticipated to pressure profitability metrics.
Adjusted earnings per American Depositary Share are expected to decline approximately 27% compared to the year-ago period, landing at RMB 10.8. Non-GAAP net income is similarly forecast to drop nearly 28% to RMB 25.47 billion.
Cloud Division Continues Delivering Strong Performance
Alibaba Cloud figures will be among the most closely monitored metrics when results arrive Thursday. During the previous quarter ending in March, external cloud revenue surged 40%, while revenue from AI-related products extended its triple-digit growth streak to 11 consecutive quarters.
The cloud segment’s adjusted EBITA jumped 57% to RMB 3.80 billion in that reporting period. The company has committed to deploying at least RMB 380 billion ($53 billion) over a three-year span to expand AI and cloud capabilities.
Alibaba’s open-source Qwen artificial intelligence models have also demonstrated significant global traction. According to Hugging Face statistics, Qwen-based derivative models reached 151,448 downloads, exceeding Meta’s Llama ecosystem by a factor of 2.6. Total downloads of Alibaba’s Qwen models reportedly crossed 3 billion within a six-month window.
Fast-Delivery Business Continues Weighing on Margins
The profitability picture presents challenges in other areas. Alibaba embedded quick-commerce capabilities directly into Taobao to challenge rivals Meituan and JD.com, but aggressive delivery subsidies and customer acquisition expenses have compressed margins significantly.
During the March quarter, operating results flipped to a loss of RMB 848 million. Free cash flow turned negative at RMB 17.30 billion, pressured by capital expenditures totaling RMB 26.89 billion. Market watchers will scrutinize Thursday’s release for evidence these losses are narrowing.
Investor sentiment received a boost Tuesday when Ant Group, in which Alibaba holds a one-third stake, revealed that Alipay introduced a comprehensive AI platform designed for business clients. Ant Group CEO Cyril Han indicated the platform will enable AI-driven services and agentic commerce capabilities.
BABA shares rose as much as 5% in Hong Kong markets following the platform announcement. This Alipay initiative builds on the June launch of Ah Bao, an AI agent interface enabling users to settle bills, purchase coffee, and locate electric vehicle charging stations.
Further supporting positive momentum, Serenity Capital Management disclosed a newly initiated $6.72 billion position in BABA during the second quarter, acquiring 70,000 ADS. The holding now accounts for 2% of the fund’s total portfolio and ranks as its 11th-largest investment.
Additionally, Alibaba reached an agreement to divest its Lingxi Games division to Trustar Capital for more than $2 billion, releasing capital for reallocation toward AI and cloud initiatives.
The stock’s 52-week trading range spans from $91.99 to $192.67. Its 50-day moving average currently stands at $113.16, while the 200-day moving average is positioned at $128.97. BABA maintains a Strong Buy consensus rating from seven analysts over the trailing three-month period, with a mean price target of $182.33.
