Micron Technology (MU) stock sank 7% on Wednesday and hit its lowest level since early August. That is a steep fall on a day when the rest of the market was climbing.
Early in the session, MU traded at $837.16, down 2.1%. The losses grew as the day went on.
The S&P 500 closed up 1.58% at 7,688.62. The Dow gained 3.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.44%.
Micron went the other way. It slid another 2.2% in overnight trading.
Two stories drove the selling. One came from China, and the other came from Washington.
The China Question
ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, said it has made progress on a 4F² DRAM design. The vertical cell layout fits more memory into a smaller space than standard chips.
CXMT’s president said the company plans a server-memory product using the design by the end of 2026. Investors fear more Chinese supply could weaken Micron’s pricing power.
DRAM makes up about 73% of Micron’s revenue. That helps explain why the news hit so hard.
Tuesday had looked better. The stock rose 3.3% on bullish memory pricing signals from Apple and SK Hynix, but most of that gain vanished.
A Form 4 insider filing also came in on Wednesday. It added a minor note of uncertainty.
Washington Joins the Selloff
Democrats won the House and Senate, giving them full control of Congress for the first time since 2023. They also flipped several governors’ offices.
Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari then called for a pause on advanced AI development. She posted on X that the agenda should include “regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence.”
Investors expect new rules could slow data center buildouts and limit AI computing capacity. Democratic campaigns have pushed operators to cover their own power and infrastructure costs.
SanDisk and SK Hynix extended their losses. Nvidia, Intel and AMD fell 0.5% to 2% overnight, while CoreWeave, Nebius and Iren slid 2% to 3.6%.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is down 4.5% this week and slipped 1.2% overnight. Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman said demand outside the U.S. would be more than enough if the American buildout slows.
Micron’s last report was strong, with record fiscal Q4 2026 revenue and a gross margin of 86.8%. Management guided for a record fiscal 2027.
Even so, the stock has dropped nearly 20% since early October. Micron’s next quarterly report is expected in December 2026.
