Elon Musk says he plans to give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year. He shared the plan in a post on X on Monday, just before 4 a.m. ET.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote. The post did not include any other details.
Musk did not say what he means by “kid.” It is not clear if the gift is for everyone under 18 or for a smaller group.
What the Gift Could Be Worth
The Census Bureau says just over 72 million people in the U.S. are under 18. Another count puts the number at about 73 million.
SpaceX stock closed at $146.03 on Friday. At that price, one share for each child would be worth a little over $10.5 billion.
Some reports put the total near $11 billion at current prices. That would be nearly double Michael Dell’s record gift to fund Trump Accounts.
Musk owns billions of SpaceX shares. The giveaway would take only a small part of his stake.
The cost would be lower if the gift covers only younger children. The Census Bureau counts about 18.5 million kids from newborns to age 4.
What Is Still Unknown
Musk did not explain what he meant by “first of many.” He also did not say how or when the shares would be delivered.
It is not clear how the shares would be held. Musk did not say if accounts would be opened for each child.
SpaceX has not shared more information about the plan. Musk’s post on X is the only public statement so far.
Another SpaceX leader has made a similar kind of gift. COO Gwynne Shotwell pledged more than $320 million of her own SpaceX stock.
Her pledge is meant to fund Trump Accounts for more than two million children. Musk is the founder and CEO of SpaceX.
SpaceX stock fell 1.74% on Friday, losing $2.59 per share. It closed the week at $146.03.
On Monday, shares were up about 1% in premarket trading. They were priced at $147.49, up $1.46 from Friday’s close.
