IonQ (IONQ) stock climbed 1% to $41.83 in after-hours trading on Wednesday. The move followed news of a fresh milestone in the company’s work with the U.S. defense sector.
IonQ moved into Stage C of DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative. This marks the final stage of the program.
The company signed a new agreement worth up to $300 million. It covers continued testing of IonQ’s quantum computing systems.
DARPA’s program exists to measure whether quantum computers can reach real-world usefulness. The agency defines that threshold as a system worth more than what it costs to build and operate.
IonQ cleared this bar after completing two earlier stages. Stage A laid out the technical concept, and Stage B built the detailed roadmap.
Inside the Stage C Testing Process
Stage C stretches out to 2029. During that window, DARPA will put several generations of IonQ’s Superion systems through independent verification.
Testers will measure IonQ’s hardware and software against the company’s own roadmap. The point is to confirm the technology performs as promised.
The $300 million is a ceiling, not a check in hand. Any funding past the first obligation hinges on future DARPA budget approvals.
IonQ has kept the size of its initial payment under wraps. Added funds would likely follow as the company clears specific milestones.
IonQ is not alone in reaching this stage. Atom Computing, Diraq, and IBM also recently advanced to Stage C.
Microsoft and PsiQuantum had already made it to the final round through an earlier DARPA initiative. That leaves a small handful of firms now working at this level of government scrutiny.
Where Wall Street Stands on IONQ
Analysts currently rate IonQ a Strong Buy overall. That call comes from 11 Buy ratings against a single Hold.
The average price target stands at $71. That works out to roughly 72% upside from current trading levels.
IonQ has offered its quantum services through major cloud platforms since 2021. Its operations stretch across North America, Latin America, EMEA, and APAC.
Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi framed the Stage C news as confidence in the company’s direction. He pointed to plans for scaling up manufacturing and deployment of Superion systems.
IonQ says it will continue building out its customer base across commercial, scientific, and security applications. The DARPA testing work remains the central focus for the next several years.
