Key Takeaways
- Meta unveiled Horizon Create and Horizon Studio, artificial intelligence platforms enabling users to generate 2D and 3D mobile games through natural language commands
- Shares of Take-Two Interactive, Unity Software, and Roblox experienced declines Thursday in response to Meta’s product launch
- Unity Software suffered the steepest loss at approximately 6%, with Take-Two declining 1.6% and Roblox dipping 0.3%
- Industry analysts suggest investor concerns may be premature given the unproven nature of Horizon’s technology
- The market response echoes a comparable selloff in January triggered by Alphabet’s Project Genie announcement
Videogame stocks experienced a downturn Thursday following Meta Platforms’ unveiling of cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology designed for mobile game development. The reveal occurred on day two of Meta’s annual Connect conference.
The social media giant presented two distinct platforms: Horizon Create and Horizon Studio. These systems enable users to input game concepts through natural language descriptions, which the AI then transforms into functioning game experiences.
Horizon Create operates on mobile devices, while Horizon Studio functions through web browsers on desktop computers. Interested developers can join a waiting list for early access when the platforms launch.
Stock Market Response
Take-Two Interactive shares declined 1.6% to close at $202.98. Unity Software experienced a sharper fall, dropping as much as 6% to approximately $41.42. Roblox shares decreased 0.3% to $48.83.
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., TTWO
AppLovin shares also retreated roughly 1% after the announcement. These four companies all operate in sectors of game development or distribution that could potentially be impacted by Meta’s emerging technology.
According to Nick McKay, a videogaming analyst at Freedom Capital Markets, market participants fear that AI could democratize game creation. Such a shift might erode competitive advantages currently enjoyed by incumbent gaming companies.
When contacted by Barron’s, Take-Two declined to provide a statement. Both Unity and Roblox did not return comment requests.
Previous AI-Related Market Disruptions
This represents the second occasion where a major technology company’s AI announcement has unsettled gaming sector investors. On January 30, identical stocks experienced selloffs following Alphabet’s introduction of Project Genie, an AI system capable of creating fully rendered 3D environments.
At that time, Take-Two President Karl Slatoff rejected such comparisons. He emphasized that Genie did not function as a game engine and should not be equated with genuine game development platforms.
McKay observed that Meta’s product demonstrations occurred under carefully managed conditions. He noted that independent parties currently lack the ability to evaluate the tools’ actual performance.
He suggested that considerable time may pass before platforms like Horizon present genuine competition to major studios such as Take-Two. The publisher’s portfolio includes high-profile franchises, including Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November release following extensive development cycles.
Major studios depend on substantial teams dedicated to narrative development, environmental design, and gameplay systems. McKay explained these components prove more difficult to replicate using basic AI technology.
Unity, which supplies software platforms utilized by developers to construct games, may face greater exposure than publishers like Take-Two. Nevertheless, McKay suggested even this threat remains speculative at present.
He observed that Unity’s stock price recovered following the Project Genie-related downturn in January. While acknowledging that immediate market responses often prove excessive, he cautioned against making similar long-term predictions.
Meta indicated that games developed using Horizon Create and Horizon Studio will be distributed across Facebook, Instagram, and Horizon ecosystems. Discoverability will depend on user engagement metrics, ensuring popular games receive greater promotion.
The platform will support creator monetization through in-game purchases and a dedicated Creator Fund. All content must undergo Meta’s safety review processes and receive automated age ratings before publication.
Meta announced that early access will be implemented in phases, with broader availability expected in coming months.
