Shares of Stellantis retreated more than 1% during Thursday’s trading session. The decline followed the release of new statistics revealing market share erosion in the automaker’s European stronghold.
According to data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, Stellantis’ European Union market presence slipped to 14.0% during August. This represents a contraction from the 14.2% recorded twelve months prior, despite total EU vehicle registrations advancing 4.5% during the same timeframe.
Performance varied significantly across the brand portfolio. Peugeot, the conglomerate’s primary marque, maintained relatively stable August sales and experienced only a 2.2% year-to-date decline.
However, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and DS faced more pronounced headwinds throughout the comparable timeframe. While the group’s cumulative year-to-date EU market share remained steady at 15.9%, matching overall market expansion, the August contraction raised concerns.
Electrification Trend Accelerates Across European Markets
Consumer appetite for electrified powertrains continued its upward trajectory throughout the European Union. Pure battery-electric vehicles secured 21.7% of total market volume, climbing from 15.8% in the prior-year period.
France, Germany, and Denmark spearheaded this expansion, with cumulative battery-electric registrations reaching 1,641,333 units during the initial eight months. Hybrid vehicles maintained their position as the preferred powertrain option, commanding a 36.6% market share.
Plug-in hybrid adoption also accelerated, advancing to 10% from the previous year’s 8.8%. Traditional petrol and diesel powertrains continued their retreat, declining to a combined 29% from 37.5% year-over-year.
France experienced the most dramatic petrol contraction, plummeting 35.8%. This transformation carries particular significance for Stellantis given its substantial concentration of internal combustion engine offerings in French and Italian markets.
Technical Breakdown Intensifies
The stock’s deteriorating performance has persisted for months. Stellantis reached €4.13 during Wednesday’s trading window, breaching its prior five-year floor of €4.16 established on September 18.
The equity concluded Thursday’s session down 1.76% at €4.15, penetrating the €4.20 support threshold. Monthly losses now stand at 10.76%, while quarterly declines have accumulated to 26.55%.
This performance positions Stellantis at 35th place among the 40 constituents comprising the CAC 40 index. Renault, a comparable industry participant, also retreated 1.69% during the same session, underscoring broader sectoral challenges.
Professional assessments mirror the mounting pressure. CIC Market Solutions maintained its “hold” recommendation on Tuesday while setting a €5.50 price objective, suggesting potential appreciation exceeding 32% from prevailing levels.
Evercore ISI reduced its target from €7.00 to €5.50 on Monday, simultaneously adjusting its stance to “market perform.” The convergence of both organizations on the identical €5.50 figure indicates limited expectations for immediate recovery, though the substantial discount to target valuations remains noteworthy.
From a valuation perspective, the stock currently trades at approximately 3.9 times anticipated earnings for the upcoming fiscal period. This compressed multiple reflects persistent uncertainty regarding future profitability trajectories.
Some encouraging developments emerged within the broader financial picture. During Stellantis’ H1 2026 earnings announcement on July 30, management highlighted a 7% expansion in its Pro One division alongside a well-received European introduction of the Smart Compact Van.
These developments proved insufficient to arrest the equity’s descent. The closest technical resistance barrier resides at €4.80, representing a premium exceeding 15% above current trading levels.
