Shopify has formed a strategic alliance with Meta that allows Muse, the social media giant’s artificial intelligence assistant, to finalize customer purchases across Shopify’s merchant network. The functionality operates through Shop Pay, the company’s streamlined payment solution.
SHOP shares climbed 7.3% to close at $137.92 on Monday after the announcement, and continued rising with gains exceeding 5% during Tuesday’s pre-market session.
CEO Tobi Lütke revealed the collaboration through a message on X, characterizing the partnership as providing a “seamless and enjoyable shopping and checkout experience with Muse.”
Meta unveiled Muse this month as an AI-powered agent capable of executing practical tasks for users, ranging from scheduling services and handling financial matters to e-commerce transactions.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, also shared news of the integration, explaining that the company aims to provide Muse users with extensive merchant options to discover “ideal products.”
Both organizations declined to provide further specifics beyond their social media announcements.
Deutsche Bank’s Analysis
Analysts at Deutsche Bank characterized the collaboration as beneficial for Shopify, countering worries that AI-driven shopping assistants might undermine the company’s operations.
Their assessment indicated the agreement actually validates Shopify’s fundamental capabilities, such as organized product information via Shopify Catalog, merchant network connections, and the payment processing framework powering Shop Pay.
“The partnership demonstrates the contrary,” analysts stated, addressing speculation that AI shopping agents could dismantle Shopify’s business framework.
Amazon Takes Opposing Stance
As Shopify welcomes Muse integration, Amazon has chosen a different path.
The e-commerce giant blocked Muse from accessing its marketplace Monday. Officials stated that external applications conducting purchases for customers must honor merchants’ decisions to decline participation, requesting Meta prevent Muse from accessing Amazon’s platform.
Amazon’s resistance stems from protecting its advertising operations. AI-powered shopping tools that circumvent its standard interface could diminish the effectiveness of its promotional offerings, which represent a substantial revenue stream.
Amazon’s restriction on Muse reflects a broader strategy. Meta’s Muse, along with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity’s Comet, are all presently prevented from executing transactions on Amazon’s marketplace.
The divergent strategies between Shopify and Amazon position Shopify as the more accommodating commerce platform toward AI technology, at least in the current landscape.
With Muse launching just two weeks prior to this partnership announcement, Shopify represents one of the earliest significant e-commerce platforms to integrate with the AI agent.
