Bitcoin experienced a significant upward movement on Friday, crossing the $80,000 threshold as disruptions in international oil markets elevated US Treasury yields. This price action coincided with the opening of Wall Street’s trading day.

According to TradingView analytics, BTC/USD reached a session high of $81,034 on the Bitstamp exchange. This upward momentum stemmed from a wider market rotation into risk-favorable assets as market participants responded to escalating energy sector volatility.
West Texas Intermediate crude initially dropped to $94.8 per barrel before staging a recovery. Current trading levels hover around $98 per barrel, with persistent supply anxieties influencing market sentiment.
In a Friday statement, the International Energy Agency cautioned that nations might need to implement oil consumption reductions. The agency reported that petroleum flows through the Strait of Hormuz declined to 7.6 million barrels daily in August ā representing a 13.1 million barrel shortfall compared to levels preceding tensions with Iran.
Amid mounting oil market instability, the yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds advanced to 5.34%, representing a 90 basis point jump for the trading session. These yield increases have prompted monetary policy adjustments from central banking authorities in both America and Japan throughout this week.
Bitcoin’s rapid price appreciation catalyzed a cascade of forced liquidations among bearish positions. CoinGlass metrics revealed that roughly $250 million in short positions across cryptocurrency markets were eliminated during a four-hour period.
Market commentator Rekt Capital shared technical analysis on X, characterizing the present situation as a “moment of truth” for bullish traders. He highlighted $82,000 as a pivotal threshold ā inability to surpass this level could establish a double-top rejection formation similar to the unsuccessful May recovery attempt.
BTC Recovers Critical On-Chain Metric
Bitcoin successfully recaptured its True Market Mean indicator, currently positioned at $76,660. Blockchain analytics provider Glassnode noted on X that this development places the asset “back above a crucial level and back into a bullish regime.”
The aggregate cost basis for corporate Bitcoin treasury holdings stands at $80,500, reinforcing the significance of the present price territory as a contested zone between bulls and bears.
Market analyst Nic Puckrin, who founded Coin Bureau, explained to Yahoo Finance: “Once bitcoin broke past the resistance level around $78,000, shorts got liquidated, pushing it toward $80,000.” He continued: “The real test is now in the $80,000ā$82,000 range, where resistance is much stronger.”
Legislative Progress on Strategic Bitcoin Reserve
From a regulatory perspective, the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve legislation gained momentum Thursday after clearing a House committee vote. This proposed legislation would secure government-controlled Bitcoin holdings in a federal reserve structure for a minimum 20-year period, subject to mandatory periodic audits.
The legislation received committee approval along partisan lines and now requires passage by both the complete House chamber and the Senate.
Bitcoin maintained its elevated position despite the Clarity Act’s failure to achieve a Senate cloture vote earlier this week. Cryptocurrency derivatives market participants sustained optimistic positioning, with substantial concentration in call options entering the weekend trading period.
