Shares of [[LINK_START_1]]USA Rare Earth (USAR)[[LINK_END_1]] climbed 2.9% during pre-market hours Thursday after the rare earth materials company revealed a collaborative venture with quantum computing specialist Pasqal (PSQL) and artificial intelligence chemistry firm Riven Systems.
The partnership’s objective centers on leveraging quantum machine learning technology to identify novel molecules capable of separating rare earth elements with greater efficiency than existing methods.
The collaboration addresses a particularly challenging and expensive bottleneck: converting Mixed Rare Earth Carbonate into individual oxide forms. Currently, Chinese manufacturers maintain near-monopoly control over this critical processing stage.
At the time of publication, USAR stock traded at $15.10, representing a 1.95% decline for the session, and has tumbled 93% over the trailing twelve months. The company maintains a modest market capitalization of approximately $16.6 million.
Technical Framework of the Collaboration
Riven Systems will execute automated laboratory experiments designed to generate training datasets for machine learning algorithms. These algorithms will concentrate on extractant selectivityāessentially determining which chemical compounds most effectively bond with particular rare earth elements.
Pasqal will subsequently deploy its Neutral Atom quantum processing platform to benchmark quantum machine learning algorithms against conventional computing methods. This approach is designed to accelerate USA Rare Earth‘s ability to identify optimal extractants.
Feedstock materials for this initiative encompass USA Rare Earth’s Round Top mining operation in Sierra Blanca, Texas, supplemented by third-party mixed rare earth carbonates and recycled waste from magnet production processes.
Alex Moyes, Senior Vice President of Upstream at USA Rare Earth, noted that the rare earth sector outside of Asia has historically faced significant challenges with the separation phase. “Chinese entities dominate this specialized capability, particularly for critical heavy rare earths including dysprosium, terbium, and yttrium,” he explained.
Moyes emphasized that the collaboration aims to “eliminate years of experimental testing” through accelerated, more competitive chemistry innovation.
Partner Company Profiles
Established in 2019, Pasqal develops neutral-atom quantum computing systems complete with comprehensive software infrastructure. The French-headquartered company maintains a global operational footprint. PSQL shares declined 4.12% during the trading session.
Riven Systems operates from New York and specializes in artificial intelligence applications for industrial chemistry sectors.
USA Rare Earth maintains operations throughout the rare earth supply chain, spanning mining activities through final magnet production, with operational facilities across the United States, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
The enterprise owns Less Common Metals, a manufacturer of rare earth metals and alloy products, and is currently expanding magnet production capabilities at its Stillwater, Oklahoma location.
USA Rare Earth recorded $2.25 million in revenue during the last twelve-month period and maintains a gross profit margin approaching 16%, based on InvestingPro data.
Should the innovative separation molecules demonstrate effectiveness, the partnership envisions developing more compact, economically efficient, and environmentally sustainable processing facilities.
