[[LINK_START_0]]MediaTek[[LINK_END_0]] has introduced a pair of advanced smartphone processors, headlined by a flagship model manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometre technology. The Taiwan-based semiconductor company positions this launch as a strategic push to capture greater market share in the premium mobile device segment.
The premier offering, dubbed the Dimensity 9600 Pro, represents MediaTek’s inaugural mobile system-on-chip fabricated using TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing node. Alongside it, the Dimensity 9600M utilizes TSMC’s 3nm process technology and is designed to serve a wider spectrum of flagship devices.
According to MediaTek, mobile devices equipped with these new processors will reach the market in the near term. The company has historically partnered with leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.
Substantial AI Performance Gains
The Dimensity 9600 Pro incorporates an integrated neural processing unit (NPU). According to MediaTek, this specialized component enables on-device generative AI operations, eliminating reliance on cloud-based processing.
MediaTek claims the NPU delivers a 51% improvement over the prior generation when processing initial prompts before AI model response generation begins. The company has not disclosed additional technical specifications regarding this benchmark.
This expansion into the premium processor segment intensifies MediaTek’s rivalry with Qualcomm, which has maintained a commanding position in the high-end Android smartphone chip market. Earlier this year, MediaTek’s market capitalization exceeded that of Qualcomm.
JC Hsu, corporate senior vice president at MediaTek, indicated the company is collaborating with device manufacturers to manage pricing pressure as AI-capable hardware drives costs upward.
“As the overall market moves to higher prices, I believe there is still room for us to increase our share of the flagship segment,” Hsu said.
Diversification Into Cloud AI Infrastructure
This high-end processor debut coincides with MediaTek’s strategic expansion beyond mobile devices. The company is actively developing AI processing solutions for data centre and cloud computing applications.
MediaTek’s inaugural AI accelerator chip, developed for a prominent US cloud services provider, is scheduled to enter volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2026.
In recent weeks, MediaTek secured $3.9 billion through a convertible bond issuance. Nvidia committed $3.5 billion of that total. Alphabet, which maintains an ongoing partnership with MediaTek on AI infrastructure projects, also participated in the financing round.
This chip announcement arrives amid an upward trend in smartphone pricing. Apple’s newly revealed foldable iPhone, unveiled last week, commands prices reaching $3,199 in the United States for the maximum storage configuration.
MediaTek’s cloud-focused AI accelerator remains on schedule for volume production by late 2026.
