President Trump expressed no fear about artificial intelligence posing an existential danger to human civilization. This declaration arrived at the same moment when multiple employees from two premier AI research companies publicly raised urgent safety warnings.
During a Thursday press briefing, when questioned about whether AI technology could trigger human extinction, the president responded definitively: “No, I don’t have any.”
Trump emphasized that his primary focus centers on maintaining American superiority over China in the artificial intelligence sector. “I have concerns that if we don’t win AI, we’re going to be put in a very bad position,” he explained to journalists. The president also indicated his belief that America currently maintains approximately a one-year technological advantage over China.
AI Lab Departures and Public Warnings
Earlier this week on Tuesday, Jacob Coxon made public his departure from Anthropic. In his announcement, Coxon declared that both Anthropic and OpenAI are recklessly “gambling with our lives” and revealed that developers within these organizations acknowledge the technology could potentially “kill us all by the end of the decade.”
Additional staff members from these companies have expressed similar apprehensions.
A primary concern among those focused on AI safety involves recursive self-improvement, commonly abbreviated as RSI. This phenomenon occurs when artificial intelligence systems develop the capability to autonomously enhance their own capabilities without requiring human intervention.
In a Wednesday evening statement, Jasmine Wang, who works on alignment research at OpenAI, wrote: “It’s hard to overstate how dangerous speeding towards RSI is.”
Jakub Pachocki, serving as OpenAI’s chief scientist, reinforced these concerns in a Saturday communication. He indicated having a “strong expectation” that artificial intelligence advancement could progress into recursive self-improvement capabilities.
“I am concerned no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence,” Pachocki stated.
Legislative Response Takes Shape
Members of Congress representing both political parties are advocating for enhanced regulatory oversight of cutting-edge AI technologies.
This past July, Representatives Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan revealed their intention to put forward the FRONTIER Act. This proposed legislation seeks to establish regulatory frameworks governing the deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
In a Wednesday post on X, Trahan declared: “Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway. It’s past time for Congress to get off the sidelines and do its job.”
Earlier in the month, Senator Bernie Sanders partnered with Representative Greg Casar to introduce the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. This legislation would implement a moratorium on advanced AI development pending the establishment of federal safety regulations.
The president has not publicly endorsed either legislative proposal. His administration continues prioritizing American dominance over China in worldwide AI advancement.
The divide between executive branch policy and AI safety advocates continues to expand.
