Hunter Biden unveiled plans Wednesday to launch LAPTOP, a memecoin named after the laptop that sparked significant political controversy in recent years.
The announcement came through social media platform X, where Biden described the token as symbolizing “resilience, redemption, and recovery.” He positioned the cryptocurrency project as reclaiming a narrative that had been weaponized against him politically.
“They turned laptop into a weapon. I turned it into a token,” Biden stated in his announcement.
Token Distribution Breakdown
LAPTOP features a total circulation of 1 billion tokens. Community airdrops account for 20% of this total. Half of this allocationā10%ābecomes claimable at launch through a portal operated by the Phoenix Veritas Foundation, the organization overseeing the token. The foundation retains discretion over distributing the remaining 10% at a future date.
The airdrop targets two specific communities. Individuals who experienced financial losses holding Donald Trump’s TRUMP memecoin qualify for 2% of the total supply. Meanwhile, subscribers to Biden’s newsletter titled “Where’s Hunter?” receive an 8% allocation.
Biden directly attacked the TRUMP token, highlighting that nearly 1 million cryptocurrency wallets suffered combined losses totaling $3.8 billion. He characterized the token as a “grift.”
A substantial 30% portion of LAPTOP’s supply connects to 30 specific political events, predominantly tracked through Polymarket prediction markets. When a predicted event materializes, corresponding tokens face permanent removal through burning. Failed predictions result in token allocation to charitable causes. Beyond this mechanism, an additional 50 million tokens are earmarked for charity unconditionally.
Community and Platform Response
The cryptocurrency community’s reception has been mixed. Major exchange Kraken removed a promotional post after facing backlash from its trading community.
Video journalist Andrew Callaghan, whose audience was initially designated for airdrop inclusion, publicly rejected association with the initiative.
Jesse Pollak, who founded Baseāthe Coinbase-developed blockchain hosting LAPTOPāclarified that his team deliberately chose not to participate in designing or marketing the token. He emphasized Base maintains no partnership arrangement with the project.
Project founders, including Biden himself, control 30% of supply under strict conditions: a six-month lock-up followed by 24-month vesting. Liquidity provision receives 10% allocation, while the foundation treasury obtains 5% for operational expenses.
Biden explicitly stated buyers shouldn’t anticipate efforts to increase token value. “LAPTOP isn’t just about owning something, it’s about saying something,” he explained.
The laptop referenced in the token’s name entered public consciousness in 2019 after Biden abandoned it at a computer repair facility in Delaware. Contents from the device subsequently served as evidence in his 2024 federal firearms case conviction.
