Genomics pioneer Illumina (ILMN) saw one of its directors execute a substantial stock sale last week, with Keith Meister divesting $57.19 million in company shares, according to SEC Form 4 disclosures. The multi-day transaction occurred from September 2 through September 4, involving 263,560 shares disposed of at prices between approximately $213 and $221.55.
During Friday’s trading session, shares changed hands around $218.22, declining $3.44 for the day. However, the stock recovered with nearly 1% gains in after-hours trading following the announcement of its S&P 500 reinstatement.
The divestiture was conducted through investment vehicles under Corvex Management’s control, where Meister holds the position of controlling general partner. Following these transactions, his indirect stake stands at 770,350 shares, supplemented by 6,780 shares held directly. It’s worth noting that insider transactions can stem from various motivations, ranging from strategic portfolio rebalancing to capitalizing on gains.
According to TipRanks, company insiders have collectively divested $436.7 million worth of ILMN shares during the preceding three-month period, resulting in a Very Negative insider confidence rating for the stock.
S&P 500 Index Return
The genomics company is slated to become an S&P 500 constituent once again when markets open on September 21. Alongside Illumina, Bloom Energy and Everpure will also gain admission, taking the places of Builders FirstSource, Molson Coors Beverage, and Trade Desk in the index’s quarterly restructuring.
Index membership typically generates additional buying pressure as passive funds and exchange-traded products tracking the S&P 500 rebalance their portfolios. Entry requirements mandate companies maintain a minimum market capitalization of $22.7 billion while satisfying specific profitability, trading volume, and free-float criteria.
This marks Illumina’s comeback to the prestigious index. The biotech firm was dropped from the S&P 500 during June 2024 when shares traded near $107. The current price represents a gain exceeding 100% from that level.
Financial Performance and Wall Street Sentiment

Management established full-year 2026 EPS guidance in the range of $5.30 to $5.40.
The company has consistently outperformed earnings projections for eight consecutive quarters.
