On Monday, Huawei revealed the Mate XT2, its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, during a presentation held in Guangzhou. The device expands twice to transform into a tablet-sized display and operates on Huawei’s latest Kirin 9050 Pro processor.
The starting price sits at 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,980), while the premium configuration reaches 24,999 yuan (around $3,725). The device becomes available for purchase on September 12.
According to Huawei Executive Director Richard Yu, the development faced significant cost challenges due to increasing memory expenses and the integration of cutting-edge technology.
The Kirin 9050 Pro represents the inaugural high-performance processor built on Huawei’s “LogicFolding” framework. This innovative design arranges logic components in vertical layers within a unified chip, reducing signal travel distance, minimizing latency, and enhancing overall efficiency.
Huawei positions this advancement as an application of its “Tau Scaling Law” concept, unveiled in May as a strategic approach to navigate U.S. sanctions limiting access to cutting-edge chip manufacturing technology.
The Mate XT2 introduces an enhanced hinge system, superior water protection, a privacy display function, and improved camera technology. According to Huawei, the device delivers 42% better performance compared to the original model.
Foldable Device Rivalry Intensifies
Xiaomi plans to introduce its competing foldable smartphone on Monday evening. Following Huawei’s product reveal, Xiaomi’s stock declined 3% during afternoon market activity.
Apple’s scheduled Wednesday event is widely anticipated to showcase its newest iPhone generation, with widespread speculation pointing to the inclusion of a foldable variant.
Samsung, which holds the global leadership position in foldable phone sales, introduced its tri-fold device in December but allegedly discontinued it after merely three months on the market. The Korean manufacturer broadened its foldable portfolio in July with a compact, passport-sized option.
Huawei’s Market Dominance in China
According to IDC data, Huawei controls China’s overall smartphone sector with a 22.6% market share in Q2 2026. Apple captures 18.1% of the market, while Xiaomi maintains 12.4%.
Huawei’s leadership becomes even more pronounced in the foldable category. Smart Analytics Global reports that the company represented 68% of all foldable phone shipments within China during the second quarter.
Huawei continues to face a sales prohibition in the United States, where authorities have designated the company as a national security threat.
The Mate XT2 introduction represents Huawei’s first Kirin processor announcement at a major product launch since the Mate 40 debut six years earlier.
As Apple and Xiaomi both advance their foldable strategies this week, the battle for dominance in the high-end foldable smartphone sector appears poised to escalate throughout the remainder of 2026.
