Tesla’s autonomous Cybercab will enable passengers to connect gaming consoles from PlayStation or Xbox directly to its integrated 22-inch display, as confirmed by CEO Elon Musk.
The announcement came following the release of promotional materials showcasing the Cybercab’s entertainment capabilities. These materials highlighted the vehicle’s built-in content ecosystem, which includes streaming video, audio services, and interactive gaming functionality accessible through the prominent dashboard screen.
This approach marks a departure from Tesla’s previous strategy. Rather than relying solely on proprietary game titles, passengers will have the option to bring their personal Sony PlayStation or Microsoft Xbox gaming systems and interface them with the display, similar to connecting a console to a home television set.
Contrast With Tesla’s Previous Gaming Strategy
Tesla first introduced in-vehicle gaming capabilities in 2019, initially featuring arcade-style entertainment available during charging sessions. The refreshed 2021 versions of the Model S and Model X incorporated specialized graphics processing units delivering approximately 10 teraflops of computational power, comparable to Sony’s PlayStation 5 console.
Tesla expanded this feature set in 2022 by integrating Steam platform compatibility into newer Model S and Model X vehicles. This integration proved temporary, as Tesla discontinued Steam functionality in 2024 following a transition to different entertainment system components.
Musk stated in 2021 that developing a proprietary gaming console to rival Xbox or PlayStation held no strategic value for the company. The current console integration strategy aligns with that philosophy by leveraging existing gaming ecosystems rather than building competing hardware.
Inside the Cybercab Experience
The Cybercab features a radical design without traditional driving controlsāno steering mechanism and no pedal systems exist. This completely autonomous vehicle is currently transporting fare-paying customers throughout Tesla’s Austin operational zone with zero human oversight.
The interior functions as a dedicated passenger entertainment environment. Factory-installed software provides access to video streaming platforms, music services, and gaming applications. Integration of Starlink V5 connectivity hardware will ensure consistent broadband internet access throughout journeys.
According to Musk’s confirmation, the physical connection interface will accommodate console hardware, enabling complete video output, audio transmission, and controller functionality through the vehicle’s primary display system.
This transformation redefines the screen’s purpose from a traditional driver information system to a comprehensive passenger entertainment hub. Eliminating the driver role converts travel time into leisure time, making sophisticated gaming configurations viable during transit.
Regulatory considerations remain relevant. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration previously scrutinized Tesla regarding potential driver distraction from in-vehicle gaming features, resulting in Tesla disabling gaming functionality during active driving periods. Console usage implementation will need to comply with evolving autonomous vehicle regulations in each operating jurisdiction.
For gaming industry leaders Sony and Microsoft, this development provides access to a new display platform without requiring proprietary hardware development. Customers maintain access to their complete game collections and user profile data.
Tesla’s contribution to this ecosystem consists of the display hardware, electrical power infrastructure, and physical connectivity interface. Content ownership and licensing arrangements remain under the control of console manufacturers.
The Cybercab service is presently operational throughout Austin. Tesla has not announced specific timelines for broader console integration feature availability.
