NIO stock experienced a 4.9% decline to $3.86 during Wednesday’s trading session, accompanied by exceptionally heavy volume of approximately 71.9 million sharesānearly twice the normal daily turnover. The sharp selloff came after two separate analyst downgrades and management’s cautious third-quarter revenue forecast.
JPMorgan’s equity analyst Nick Lai downgraded the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer from Buy to Neutral while simultaneously trimming his price objective from $7.00 down to $4.50. Lai’s rationale centered on underwhelming delivery projections for the latter half of 2026 and growing concerns about weakening consumer demand throughout China’s passenger vehicle sector as 2027 approaches.
Freedom Broker followed suit, downgrading NIO to Hold from its previous Buy recommendation while reducing its price target from $7.00 to $4.00. The brokerage firm pointed to third-quarter delivery guidance that came in beneath Wall Street’s expectations as evidence of decelerating growth momentum.
Despite the negative market reaction, NIO’s second-quarter operational results showed several positive developments. Quarterly revenue surged 69.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching RMB32.14 billion ($4.74 billion), while vehicle deliveries increased 49.4% to 107,658 units. The company’s adjusted losses contracted, and its vehicle gross margin expanded to 18.5%.
Additionally, NIO generated positive free cash flow during the period and showcased improved cost management through its emphasis on premium vehicle offerings.
However, these accomplishments failed to overcome investor concerns. The revenue figure still lagged behind Wall Street projections, marking the third consecutive quarter where the stock faced selling pressure following earnings announcements.
Third-Quarter Forecast Falls Short of Expectations
Company leadership provided third-quarter revenue guidance in the range of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, missing the $5.1 billion consensus estimate from analysts. While the shortfall appears modest, it was sufficient to trigger skepticism regarding the strength and sustainability of NIO’s business recovery.
Lai reduced his revenue projections for 2026-2027 by 5% to 9% and lowered earnings forecasts by 13% to 52%, noting that the revised financial outlook no longer justifies an optimistic investment stance. The analyst now anticipates NIO stock will deliver returns comparable to the overall automotive sector.
Escalating input costs represent an additional challenge. Both memory chip and battery raw material prices have experienced upward pressure, potentially threatening the margin improvements NIO achieved during the second quarter.
Vehicle Deliveries Advance Despite Intense Market Competition
NIO reported August deliveries of 35,836 vehicles, marking a 14.5% increase from the year-ago period. Cumulative deliveries through August totaled 262,893 units, reflecting a 57.9% gain compared to the corresponding timeframe in 2025.
Company executives are setting their sights on exceeding 40,000 monthly deliveries during the fourth quarter and restoring positive cash flow generation. Achieving this objective would necessitate quarterly deliveries surpassing 120,000 units, which depends heavily on improved conditions within China’s electric vehicle marketplace.
The automaker continues expanding its battery swap infrastructure and advancing Firefly technology development, with possible robotaxi deployment opportunities being explored.
On the distribution front, NIO is launching multi-brand Sky Store locations and inaugurating a flagship Nio House facility in Macau to showcase its NIO, Onvo, and Firefly vehicle lineups. This retail strategy aims to reduce distribution expenses.
Sanford C. Bernstein likewise reduced its price target on NIO shares from $6.00 to $5.00 while keeping a market perform designation. The overall analyst consensus currently reflects a Hold rating, with a mean price target of $6.29.
Per TipRanks data, NIO maintains a Moderate Buy consensus rating derived from four Buy recommendations, four Hold ratings, and one Sell rating issued over the past three months, with an average analyst price target of $5.31.
