Shares of Equinix (EQIX) advanced 2% during Wednesday’s trading session following the company’s announcement of Equinix Inference Exchange, a distributed AI inference solution developed in partnership with Nvidia and Together AI.
This initiative integrates Nvidia’s Enterprise Reference Architectures with Together AI’s inference technology and Equinix’s worldwide data center network. The collaboration aims to enable businesses to implement AI workloads more rapidly, economically, and with greater adaptability.
Through Together AI’s infrastructure, access to over 200 open-source AI models becomes available. These models will be distributed via Equinix’s international data center footprint and linked through Equinix Fabric to cloud services, network providers and AI platforms.
The reveal occurred during Equinix Horizon, the company’s first-time customer and partner conference. Additionally, Equinix introduced Equinix Fabric One at the gathering, designed to facilitate enterprise connectivity throughout distributed AI ecosystems.
According to CEO Adaire Fox-Martin, the organization stands “uniquely positioned” to address enterprise AI requirements, referencing almost thirty years of infrastructure development for mission-critical operations.
Platform Architecture Explained
The platform operates through a three-tier architecture. Equinix delivers the foundational infrastructure, encompassing power systems, thermal management and operational oversight. Nvidia contributes its Enterprise Reference Architectures along with AI hardware solutions. Together AI manages the inference layer above, supporting both shared and exclusive deployment configurations.
The solution establishes connections to inference providers throughout key metropolitan areas globally, engineered to minimize time-to-first-token metrics. It further integrates with numerous cloud platforms, network systems and AI service providers to streamline deployment processes.
Equinix presently maintains over 280 data centers spanning 77 metropolitan regions, featuring 230 cloud connectivity points and more than 10,500 interconnected enterprises. Among the top 10 AI model developers, eight currently utilize Equinix infrastructure, along with nine of the leading 10 AI cloud platforms.
Target Applications and Use Cases
Equinix Inference Exchange addresses three primary enterprise scenarios. The initial focus area is metro edge inference, which positions AI processing nearer to end users and data sources for reduced latency performance. The second application involves open model migration, assisting organizations transitioning from proprietary to open-source model frameworks. The third centers on sovereign AI, catering to enterprises in regulated sectors requiring AI operations within designated geographic boundaries.
Nvidia VP Raj Mirpuri characterized the partnership as transforming “the world’s leading digital interconnection platform into a global fabric for AI inference.”
Together AI co-founder and CEO Vipul Ved Prakash emphasized that the collaboration demonstrates model selection and performance “are not trade-offs” but instead represent “the foundation of enterprise AI done right.”
Commercial availability of Equinix Inference Exchange is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
