The parent entity behind cryptocurrency platform Kraken, known as Payward, has announced intentions to secure comprehensive banking authorizations in territories beyond American borders. This strategic direction was revealed by co-CEO Dave Ripley during his appearance at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2026.
According to Ripley, the organization isn’t currently targeting U.S. banking authorization. The strategy centers on international regions where regulatory frameworks might enable more expedient development.
Payward’s Vision of Banking Services
Ripley outlined an expansive interpretation of banking operations. His definition encompasses payment processing, financial transfers, credit facilities, interest-bearing products, and safekeeping servicesāall activities Payward currently engages in.
The organization has defined three core business verticals: trading services, banking operations, and wealth management. These strategic pillars will shape the company’s international growth initiatives moving forward.
The company has already established a presence in regulated banking via Kraken Financial. This division operates as a Wyoming-chartered Special Purpose Depository Institution that commenced operations in March 2024.
Kraken Financial holds authorization to provide digital asset safekeeping and institutional deposit services. That said, it lacks authority to extend loans using customer fiat deposits and doesn’t carry FDIC insurance like traditional banking institutions.
In 2025, Kraken Financial obtained a restricted Federal Reserve master account. This milestone marked an unprecedented achievement as the first cryptocurrency enterprise to gain entry to components of the central banking payment infrastructure.
Ripley explained that obtaining traditional banking credentials in foreign nations would enable Payward to deliver expanded financial services to a broader customer base. He refrained from disclosing particular countries or specific banking authorizations under consideration.
Home Loans and Future Offerings
Chief Commercial Officer Mark Greenberg offered additional insights into potential future products. He indicated the organization aspires to eventually provide home loan products to its customer base.
Greenberg’s statements underscore Payward’s aspiration to evolve into a comprehensive financial services company, extending well beyond its cryptocurrency exchange roots. Entering the mortgage market would constitute a significant expansion from its existing digital asset-centered services.
For institutional clients, Kraken has recently introduced qualified custody capabilities via Kraken Institutional. This offering serves organizations requiring compliant infrastructure for digital asset storage and administration.
The custody solution integrates seamlessly with Kraken’s broader service offerings. Corporate clients can coordinate transfers and various cryptocurrency operations through a unified platform.
Payward hasn’t disclosed specific timeframes regarding banking license applications or target jurisdictions. The firm has similarly withheld information about which financial products will debut first in emerging markets.
Recent achievements, including the Federal Reserve master account access and Wyoming charter approval, demonstrate the company’s commitment to constructing a regulated financial infrastructure. Securing comprehensive banking authorization internationally represents the logical next phase in this evolution.
