Younger investors using Binance are shifting capital toward exchange-traded funds while maintaining lower trading frequencies compared to their older counterparts, new research from Binance indicates.
Exchange-traded funds represented 25% of Gen Z equity transaction volume during early August. This marks an increase from 21.9% of total equity capital inflows recorded in July and 18.5% documented in June.
During this timeframe, the proportion directed toward individual company stocks declined from 77% in June to 74.2% by July.
Younger Cohort Shows Lower Trading Activity and Extended Holding Periods
The exchange analyzed trading patterns across four demographic segments: Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. The analysis examined direct stock purchases, tokenized equity products, and traditional finance perpetual contracts.
Gen Z participants completed an average of 13 monthly transactions in traditional finance perpetual markets. By comparison, Millennials executed 17 trades monthly while Gen X completed 16.5.
Within Gen Z direct equity portfolios, 22% had not executed any sell orders. This contrasts with 19% for Gen X investors and only 9% among Baby Boomers. Millennials demonstrated the highest proportion of purchase-only portfolios at 30%.
Popular holdings within Gen Z buy-only portfolios featured Broadcom, Tesla, and the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF.
The exchange did not clarify whether this buy-only pattern represents deliberate long-term investment philosophy. Since the direct equities offering debuted in June, the available data spans a limited timeframe.
Minimal Engagement with Leveraged Products
Younger traders demonstrated limited appetite for leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds. According to Binance, 88.2% of Gen Z traditional finance perpetual portfolios showed zero activity in these instruments.
This percentage dropped to 84.5% among Millennials and 85.9% for Gen X, indicating Gen Z participants were least engaged with leveraged ETF products compared to other working-age demographics.
The platform did not provide explanations for this divergence, leaving questions about whether risk tolerance, product accessibility restrictions, or other factors drove the pattern.
Meanwhile, the tokenized equity sector maintained expansion throughout this period. RWA.xyz recorded $2.37 billion in distributed tokenized stock valuation as of Saturday, representing approximately 5% growth over the preceding month.
Binance’s bStocks platform temporarily eclipsed Kraken’s xStocks offering to claim the second-largest position among tokenized stock issuers. At maximum levels, bStocks controlled roughly $624 million compared to $579 million for xStocks.
By Saturday, xStocks had reclaimed its position with $603 million, while bStocks retreated to $535 million. Ondo Finance maintained market leadership at $962 million.
The overall sector has experienced substantial user base expansion. DWF Labs reported in July that total holders across five leading tokenized stock platforms increased 92% within 30 days to reach 752,000.
Robinhood commanded the largest holder count at 328,000 but managed only $44 million in tokenized stock valuation. Ondo administered $857 million while xStocks held $487 million during that measurement period.
Crypto.com has recently joined this market segment, introducing tokenized derivative products linked to 1,500 U.S. equities and ETFs for qualified users within the European Economic Area and additional authorized jurisdictions.
