The Strawmap functions as a collaborative planning document outlining potential protocol enhancements through 2029. Rather than representing firm commitments, it serves as a living framework that the developer community can adjust as technical research advances.
Privacy Elevated to Foundational Protocol Layer
Unlike the 2023 version, which did not address privacy at all, Ethereum’s updated roadmap positions privacy as an essential protocol characteristic, placing it on equal footing with censorship resistance and network security.
Among the privacy-enhancing technologies now being evaluated are keyed nonces, recent roots, lean privacy pools, and wormhole mechanisms. These innovations aim to minimize the transaction data that external parties can observe and analyze about individual users.
Components of FOCIL (Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists) also feature prominently in the privacy category. FOCIL seeks to strengthen transaction inclusion guarantees against potential censorship by block builders and is anticipated to be a major component of Ethereum’s forthcoming Hegota hard fork.
Quantum Computing Threats Gain Urgency
While quantum security received minimal attention in the 2023 roadmap, it has now been positioned as a near-term priority within Ethereum’s strategic planning framework.
Ethereum relies on cryptographic algorithms that could be compromised if sufficiently advanced quantum computers emerge. Transitioning to quantum-resistant alternatives without substantially increasing signature sizes or transaction costs represents a significant technical hurdle.
Among the solutions being investigated are LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation techniques, and zkzk frames as potential elements of a comprehensive post-quantum defense strategy. Prior research by an Ethereum contributor demonstrated that implementing wallet-level quantum protection could cost approximately $0.07 per user account.
Native Rollup Architecture Becomes Viable
The concept of native rollups was absent from Ethereum’s 2023 roadmap primarily because zero-knowledge proof technology had not yet reached sufficient maturity for practical implementation.
Currently, rollups function as independent layer-2 solutions that execute transactions off the main Ethereum chain before submitting cryptographic proofs to the base layer for verification. Native rollups would integrate portions of this verification logic directly into Ethereum’s core protocol.
According to Buterin, the development strategy is shifting away from pursuing a single universal scaling solution. Blob and gas futures markets represent another novel addition to the roadmap. These mechanisms would enable users or layer-2 networks to secure guaranteed future access to Ethereum’s data availability or computational resources.
Buterin also suggested that artificial intelligence could facilitate comprehensive formal verification of protocol code at scale. Additionally, recursive STARK proof systems may eventually span Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data availability layers.
The Ethereum virtual machine itself may undergo transformation over time, with leanISA and RISC-V architectures mentioned as potential alternatives, though Buterin noted these possibilities remain premature for inclusion in the current Strawmap.
