The Cupertino-based tech giant is conducting behind-the-scenes evaluations of memory components manufactured by Chinese company CXMT for incorporation into its iPhone and MacBook lineup, based on reporting from the Wall Street Journal this past weekend.
Preliminary discussions between Apple and CXMT regarding a potential supply agreement are underway, though the tech giant is holding for federal government authorization before advancing further.
The strategic motivation behind Apple’s pursuit of CXMT centers on financial considerations. Memory component pricing has surged amid aggressive AI sector demand, compelling the company to implement price increases across its global product portfolio. Securing a Chinese supply partner could strengthen Apple’s negotiating position on pricing.
However, U.S. export regulations impose strict constraints on the scope of any potential partnership. American corporations face prohibitions on transferring technological knowledge to CXMT, eliminating the possibility of the collaborative custom chip engineering Apple routinely conducts with established suppliers including Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung.
Apple’s options are limited to procuring ready-made CXMT components and price negotiations, according to export control specialist Kevin Wolf, an attorney with Akin Gump.
CXMT completed its Shanghai stock exchange debut recently and has emerged as mainland China’s highest-valued publicly traded enterprise. The company reported second-quarter revenue figures exceeding the prior year’s results by more than eight-fold.
The U.S. Department of Defense has designated CXMT on its roster of entities allegedly connected to Chinese military operations. Certain American policy officials express apprehension that procurement contracts from major U.S. corporations could provide CXMT with financial resources and backdoor exposure to American technological knowledge.
Supply chain logistics present additional challenges. CXMT has reached full production capacity for the current year, leaving minimal availability for additional international clients. HP and Acer have already obtained modest volume commitments and are negotiating to secure expanded supply allocations for 2027.
CXMT component pricing generally aligns with Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung, occasionally exceeding competitor rates due to constrained availability and elevated manufacturing expenses.
